A Treasure

I am generally a pretty critical reader, and it's almost embarrassing to write such a glowing review, but I can say without reservation that this book is a treasure. (And no, I am not a friend of the family. I haven't even watched him on The Daily Show, although I'll probably start to watch now.) Trevor Noah is a superb storyteller, and this memoir is his eloquent and touching account of growing up as the mixed race child of a single mother, living in poverty in deeply racist and sexist South Africa. He provides an inside look at a life very different from what almost anyone has experienced (due to his unusual ethnicity and upbringing), yet it is easy to relate to him and fascinating to read his stories. The book reads like a novel, but it is so much more affecting because it is true. Reminiscent of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, it is a superbly written story of a perceptive and resilient child thriving in very difficult circumstances, and it beautifully captures these circumstances seen through the eyes of a child.

Trevor's mother taught him to use humor to help cope with life, and he learned that lesson well. Despite having good reasons for feeling self-pity and resentment, Trevor had a knack for finding the humor in even the most difficult circumstances. Not forced, jokey humor, but just a low-key appreciation for the weirdness of life. As I turned the last page, I smiled at the ending, which was perfect, but I also felt sad that the story ended. I want to know what happened next. I hope he will write a sequel.

Comedy out of Tragedy

My decision to request Born a Crime has nothing to do with star power or fandom. I have to admit I have never seen Trevor Noah on the Daily Show. I requested this book when I learned it was about Trevor Noah's childhood in Apartheid South Africa.

I started reading my ebook galley as soon as I was approved.

I have to love a guy who finds comedy in tragedy and who gleefully spins yarns about experiences that would keep most of us in therapy for a lifetime. There is a genius in comedy that allows us to encounter devastating truths through the protective lens of laughter.

The heroine of the book is Noah's mother, a feisty lady with a solid rock faith, a gal who snubs her nose at things that don't make sense. She makes mistakes, but always out of love. She takes huge risks but somehow Jesus is always there to catch her mid-fall.

Noah was "naughty as s***" and a challenge to raise, but never hateful or mean. He learned to navigate Apartheid society's complex system that divided people in to three groups: black, white, and colored. How one was categorized was senseless. Japanese were put into the 'white' slot but Chinese into the 'colored'.

"The genius of Apartheid was convincing people who were the overwhelming majority to turn on each other. Apart hate, is what is was."

Noah was 'colored' with a 'black' Xhosa African mother and a 'white' Swiss father, his very existence implicating his parent's crime. Had the police discovered them, his parents would be sent to jail and Noah sent to an orphanage. He spent much of his life hidden away, indoors. His parents could not be seen together with him, and his mother had to even pretend he was not her child.

Noah was "colored by complexion but not by culture." He spoke multiple languages, Xhosa and Zulu and Afrikaans, and English, could fit into most groups, but felt affiliated to black culture.

The book is a series of episodic tales, thoughtfully constructed, saving the climax of his family history until the end of the book, after we have come to know and understand them.

"I saw the futility of violence, the cycle that just repeats itself, the damage that's inflicted on people that they in turn inflict on others. I saw, more than anything, that relationships are not sustained by violence, but by love."

The book is funny but is more than a diversive read, it enlarges our understanding of the world. Noah offers an understanding of South African history, colonialism, and Apartheid that is engaging and relevant. He shares the important things he learned and offers them to us. We should listen. We should learn.

A Story of Resilience

It's hard to imagine a childhood like Trevor Noah 's, although there are probably many others who have similar stories. It is a credit to this man for surviving this impossible beginning, but the truest measure of his character is in his realization that the hero of the story was really his mother. Noah 's book will inspire others and will serve as a true witness to the powers of resilience. One can only wish that all children who are dealing with such trauma can find strength and support through examples such as Noah 's.

Wait....1950s recipes...microwave?

SOME of these recipes are NOT from the 1950s "golden age of american home cooking". Some of the recipes, at least the cooking instructions with the recipes, are clearly more modern.

While the book is full of fine and simple 1950s recipes, and has lots of fun, nostalgic 1950s drawings and photos of husbands and wives in the kitchen, or by the backyard barbeque grill. And naturally, (recent, not 1950s) photos of what the food of what its supposed to look like after its been cooked and prepared, I do have a minor quibble. Some of the directions in the recipes (just a few of the recipes, mind you, not all) calls for the cook to use a microwave oven.

I'm looking over these specific recipes and thinking, "wait....1950s recipes? Microwave oven?" Now, I KNOW that microwave ovens were invented well before the 1950s. But by the 1950s, microwave ovens were not yet ready for the everyday home kitchen. By 1971, only about 1% of homes would have microwave ovens (25% by the 1980s). So I'm quite sure that in the 1950s, the average common housewife didnt cook using a microwave oven. They used the usual gas or electric oven (sometimes wood burning oven).

I cannot speak for everybody, but as for myself, I just dont like food that has been cooked by a microwave oven. In my opinion, food is of much better taste and quality when its been cooked in a gas oven. So it was disheartening to find recipes that look very good and that I would like to try (Burgundy Beef Stew is one of a few examples), but I find myself rather hamstrung by the instructions in the recipes that tells me to cook the recipe in a microwave oven.

MOST of the recipes in the book indeed has instructions as to how to cook your recipe using a gas oven. But the ones that call on you to cook in a microwave, they have no alternative instructions in case you would rather cook in a regular gas oven. Its a bit of a disappointment, but other than those few "cook in microwave" recipes, the book is quite good.

A Must Have For All Homes

The Portable Patriot, edited by Joel Miller and Kristen Parrish, is a collection of our nations most important and intimate documents, letters, and sermons. It shows you the history, the full history, behind our country from the view of those who were there.

I will say, this is now my favorite book. This collection includes such writings as the Mayflower Compact (something often overlooked in our childrens educations), sermons during pre-revolutionary times showing the passion and the heart behind the desire to be free, letters from George Washington, Ben Franklin and others, and documents such as the Articles of the Confederation and more. This is a must have book for any home. We will be using it in our homeschool years to lay down the foundation of full understanding about the history of our nation. We hope our children will be well versed to defend the true intentions of the start of our country. But, even without the homeschooling aspect, this is a book every American should read in order to be informed about our past. Without our past, we have no future.

A truly awesome little book

I've been a long-time history buff, but have an education limited by what our educational system believes we need to know. This little book shattered barriers for me and helped me learn about things I had never heard about before.

First, as a collector of books, this book has a very pleasing format. It is published as a small hardcover with deckled page edges and the interior of the boards has a copy of the signatures that appear on the Declaration of Indenpendence. The format and the way this book is put together gives it a nice feel - I did say I love and collect books.

This book is by no means comprehensive - the authors said as much in their introduction - it can't hold all of the important documents related to our great country, but it contains what the editors felt was most important. Also, they admit that the documents that they do have in this book, are not presented in their entirety - the book would be too long.

I got a lot out of this little book. There were documents and stories I had never heard of. For example, "John Cotton on the Abuse of Power." In reading this I could feel some of the first stirrings that colonists felt prior to the revolution. Another item that was of very high interest to me was "James Otis Opposes Arbitrary Law Enforcement." Another book I recently read, a fictional account of that time period (The Rebellion of Jane Clarke: A Novel), touched upon the character of James Otis. It was so interesting to read something by this great man. Finally, "the First Inaugural Address of George Washington," gave me a window to see into a time where our country was founded and a window to our first president.

This is one of the most awewome little books I've ever owned. History buff, or not, it is impressive and touched a chord in my soul, the soul of an American.

A wonderful collection

This is a wonderful collection of works from the earliest days of our nation, assembled by people whose love of country, and more importantly, love of the principles it made manifest, is clear and unassailable. You will want to read every piece contained within, and you will want to share them with your children.

It brims with hope and inspiration for our nation and its first principles.

As with all such things of late, however, the people who most NEED to read these works will not. At best, they don't care about the ideas. At worst, they consider these works, and the people who wrote them, to be wrong-headed and evil. There are a great many such people around - many more than you will admit in your most despairing moments - and they must be resisted at all turns and at all cost.

So therein lies the second reason to read this book cover to cover, several times - to strengthen yourself for the battle for America's soul that is now well underway.

This Book Turned My Life Around

When I read this book, I quickly realized that I was a "textbook" case. I had suffered from classic adrenal fatigue since 1989 when I became very exhausted and it never lifted. Then I suffered many related symptoms of adrenal fatigue which Wilson describes so clearly in the book.

I have to say that the first benefit of this book was to realize that here was a doctor who understood me. I wasn't crazy and this is a known syndrome. That, right away, removed 50% of the suffering (which was the psychological component of not knowing what was going on.)

The rest took a while and involved actually implementing the many recommendations Dr. Wilson makes. Warning: It isn't 3-easy steps! If you have adrenal fatigue and want to get well it will take focus and commitment. And Dr. Wilson states that fact directly.

For those who are skeptical about the existence of adrenal fatigue, there is a lab test called the ACTH-Stimulation test which, in my case, positively confirmed the my adrenals were unresponsive to the pituitary signal of ACTH.

The number one key was to make Dr. Wilson's recommended lifestyle changes by changing my apply-more-pressure orientation to life. I had to learn to stop motivating myself through fear, anxiety and pressure and, instead, learn to have more orientation towards the simple pleasures in life. This took away a great deal of the stress which was preventing me from healing my adrenals. There were also many dietary, exercise and sleep changes I had to make.

Next, the nutritional supplement recommendations were tremendously helpful, in particular Siberian ginseng, ashwaganda, and licorice. Here are the two products I used which were formulated according to the author's recommendations in the book itself.

FROM A NURSE: THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR ALL WHO ARE EXHAUSTED AND WANT TO FIND OUT THE CAUSE AND BEST OF ALL, THE SOLUTION

I'm an RN. I can't recommend this book strongly enough. I bought my supplements two weeks ago now and am feeling better already. Dr Wilson has the courage to tell people what their medical doctors won't. I followed his recommendations and in addition to the supplements, wrote out my plan after his writing exercise. That was 2 lists: What makes me feel good (enjoy) and What makes me feel stressed (bad). I did this in just a few minutes thinking I would go back to it later. As I kept reading, the next thing was to arrange the top 5 in each list. For fun, I did it right away. OMG! In each list I had put them almost in the right order.

The next task was to make a plan to increase the good things, situations, etc and decrease the negative. I still work. Unfortunately, the night shift. The on, off biorhythm was/is my biggest enemy. Since my management won't let me change from that shift to either of the other two, I have decreased my available time each month. The benefit of working Per Diem. Unusual but at the facility I work, management only considers per Diem as a one shift thing. I am able to work with the 2nd shift supervisor to pick up extra shifts so I can maintain the hours I need to work each month. This book gave me the impetus to change my situation. I had been "waiting" for over a year for them to hire someone to replace me on the night shift.

Dr Wilson's book should be required reading for every medical person! I have shared with a few co-workers and two have just purchased their own books. And, as an R.N. I can see residents whom I care for who most likely also would benefit from this method. Instead, they are filled with drugs. No, I'm not against drugs but I AM a strong supporter of feeling well. Unfortunately, many times drugs mask what is really going on and the real problem still remains. Therefore, one never REALLY "feels well".

I guess what I'm trying to say is this. When you are caught up in life like a boat without paddles down a raging stream..... Then this is the book for you. dr Wilson's information gave me the oars and the insight how to paddle myself back to calmer waters. One little nugget for me is the following:
I hate naps....with a passion. Now is the past three weeks, I have taken 2 twenty minute "naps". Laying down. He explained why it's better for the adrenal glands. I had always just pushed through. Wow, this and other suggestions, supplements, and life changes have made a difference.

The most difficult is the exercise. I had gotten so bad that I had severe pain located above both kidneys then experienced hot burning on my back every time my back touched a seat, especially when driving. Yup, doctors had no idea! Finally ended up having acupuncture and Dr G. educated me.

Now I love exercise but was so exhausted that it was a chore... As an aside, I work so I can keep my two horses. We had a family emergency and one of our boys has narcolepsy and ended up living with us. Real rough year as many of you who may be reading this. But there is an answer.
Now I finally am a bit better and slowly working some exercise back into my daily routine. My near goal is to be riding like I was two years ago

I wish the best for the thousands of you who have been misdiagnosed. Keep up the faith and heal yourself as I know it can be done.

Very real, read my review if you think it sounds like you,get help..won't go away on its own just gets worse...

Very important information in here. My alternative doctor suggested I might have Adrenal Exhaustion since
several mornings I could not make my body move out of that bed to get ready for work. I thought to myself
what the heck is going on here? Its real folks. Never knew much about the Adrenals before, after reading
most of this book I have been educated. Also have educated my sister who is a Nurse and she has some
of the symptoms too. She never knew what the Adrenals really did. Why aren't the Medical Schools teaching
about the importance of the Adrenals? Most western Medicals Doctors don't have a clue how to treat a person
with Adrenal Fatigue. This disorder can be present also in other members of your family. Several symptoms of
Adrenal Fatigue are feeling freezing cold all the time, feeling overwhelmed by or unable to cope with stress, exhaustiion
or poor recovery after exercise, poor resistance to respiratory infections, difficulty recovering from jet lag or time changes,
carvings for salty foods(like potato chips), difficulty concentrating: brain fog, chronic food or environmental allergies, plus
another fifteen symptoms I cannot list them all here. Just get the book, take of yourself cause it won't go away on its own
just get worse.

a crucial reference in preparing for a high conflict divorce

Reading this during my then best friend's divorce was like reading an intimate biography of his ex wife. I wish we'd found this earlier into the divorce. If you go through a high conflict divorce, there are a few things you might find helpful: lots of money, a good psychologist, a friend who has been through a similar high conflict divorce already, lots more money, and this book. Oh, and if you're a man and you're divorcing a woman with borderline personality disorder, don't do it in Massachusetts. No, seriously, don't. Mommy can do no wrong in the eyes of the Massachusetts family court judges.

A must-read for anyone considering leaving a personality-disordered spouse. Do not even consider divorce without it.

Read "Stop Walking on Eggshells" if you think you're up to the daunting task of salvaging a marriage to a borderline. Read Splitting if you want to know how to get out safely. Buy a copy for your lawyer. Read it cover to cover and make sure he or she does the same. It is invaluable.

The single most crucial piece of advice I obtained from this book is to ensure that all of your legal pleadings focus on specific, factual descriptions of your borderline spouse's actual conduct. Words, gestures, actions, inactions. Don't try to convince the judge your spouse is a rage-filled maniac by saying "my spouse is a rage-filled maniac" - show the judge your spouse is a rage-filled maniac by detailing the exact things she (or he) has done or said to you. Let her (or his) conduct speak for itself. The best advice for anyone divorcing a personality-disordered spouse is to read this book, then read it again.
