Fun and not too scary

I have read this book to my kindergarten class and it brought much delight to my little listeners. The story of the green ribbon around Jenny's neck is always a favorite and I've had to order a new copy of the book because my original is so tattered.

The stories are just scary enough to elicit ooh's and aah's and "cool!" But considering what kids see on TV and in the movies these days, their tolerance level for scary things is a lot higher than when their teacher was a kid!

This is a fun book for families and classes to read together.

When Garrard was a nineteen-year-old college student, he was outed to his parents, and was forced to make a life-changing decision: either agree to attend a church-supported conversion therapy program that promised to “cure” him of homosexuality; or risk losing family, friends, and the God he had prayed to every day of his life. Through an institutionalized Twelve-Step Program heavy on Bible study, he was supposed to emerge heterosexual, ex-gay, cleansed of impure urges and stronger in his faith in God for his brush with sin. Instead, even when faced with a harrowing and brutal journey, Garrard found the strength and understanding to break out in search of his true self and forgiveness.

Courageous. Poignant. Revealing. A Must Read. . .

An amazing book on so many levels! In this memoir, Garrard Conley shares intimate details of his adolescent and early adult years in his quest to understand and accept himself. His journey is made far more difficult by his fundamental Christian upbringing and his parents and community's unwillingness to accept him as he is. This leads him to ex-gay therapy which is far more harmful than helpful. Anyone who reads this book will no longer be able to accept such therapy as an acceptable treatment. Conley's willingness to expose the intimate details of his life brings the reader into his life, pulling for him to find self-love in a world that makes it difficult to do.

On another level, the book has incredible writing. The vivid descriptions, the limited but effective dialogue, the changes in time, and the development of the key people in his life at that time show Conley's incredible writing skills. Admittedly, at times I wanted to skip the descriptions in order to discover what happened next in his life. However, the quality of the writing kept me reading every word.

I will look forward to reading more by Conley!

Gut-wrenching

I am writing this immediately after finishing this difficult book. Boy Erased is the author's story of struggle. He was raised in a strict Baptist home and community. His father was ordained as a Baptist minister while he was in college. And the author is gay. He is outed to his parents by a predatory college student. His parents force him into ex-gay counseling with the evangelical based Love in Action (LIA). One tenant of LIA is that gay people are damaged. Abuse is assumed and can be traced back for generations in a family. Find and confront the abuse, accept God in your life and Boom! Cured! Somehow he comes out alive. Mostly.

The book moves back and forth between Mr. Conley's childhood and adolescence and young adulthood. He has a girlfriend and the church community assumes they will marry. He tries to fake the relationship and cannot. In college he tries to both find himself and hide from himself. He is victimized by a fellow student. When his parents find out he is gay, his father threatens to cut off financial and emotional support unless the author enters treatment and is cured. Parts of the book describe the "counseling" that occurs at LIA, a 12-step based program. Mr. Conley tries to genuinely embrace the program and then tries to fake it before ultimately walking out. The tipping point for him is a Gestalt empty chair exercise in which he is encouraged to express anger at his father. Anger that he does not feel.

The richest parts of the book for me are when Mr. Conley tries to describe his conflicted feelings. What does it feel like to love your parents, know they love you, but also know that they cannot accept who you are? To know that they think you are diseased? What does it feel like to never be honest about yourself with your friends? What does it feel like to love God, apply the scriptures to your life, and then feel abandoned by God and the church when you need them most? My criticism of the book is that I wish these areas had been explored and fleshed out more. That said, Mr. Conley's recovery is still a work in progress and the confusion and mixed feelings are real. I would love to read what he would write about himself in 10 or 20 years.

I would definitely recommend this book. Hopefully it will make us all think more. Words and actions hurt and the damage can take a long time to scab over. Scars remain. Let's be kind to each other folks!

This might have been my story

That could have been me. When I came out decades ago, my Mom lovingly suggested that I go hear an ex-gay speaker at our church. I was grown, married, and divorcing. Not being reliant on parents makes it easier to resist such invitations, as does being older. Moreover, I had the support of a loving wife who would have skinned me alive. But about the book. . . .

This was more of a history book for me, perhaps because of my vantage point. I still found it moving, but not earth shattering, as some have described. Garrard's gift, and what made the book wonderful for me, is his failure to demonize anyone -- himself (more or less), his parents, or God. His ability to see the dignity in his mother and father -- very different folks -- and the dignity in others that he encounters on his journey is one of the special qualities in this memoir.

It wasn't my story, but his writing is adept enough that he takes you on his journey with him, and I was engrossed enough that for a few hours, his story was mine. I recommend the book, even for someone who, like me, passed these milestones some time ago.

An essential pick-up for any one who regrets retirement upon finding how much "work" it can be.

Retirement brings with it much clutter, and it's easy for anyone who's accustomed to a daily schedule with all the "extra" business once taken care of by the employer (health, medical and dental bills, disability insurance, Social Security, annuity income), to feel dazed and confused, even perplexed and occasionally overwhelmed by all of the "secondary" concerns that require judicious choices not to mention poring through mountains of mailings, sorting out various plans, and being careful to note deadlines.

One of the more daunting programs, even before all the recent notoriety of ObamaCare, is Medicare. Not to worry. Patricia Barry's book explains the program in lucid, organized prose, separating the essentials from the less relevant information, and in a manner that enables the reader to make the choices that will ensure the best care at the most affordable price--including the distressful situations we may have witnessed in our parents without applying them to our own lives--until now.

Of most help to me was the explanation of Part D, which prepares anyone who has used, or possibly will be prescribed, expensive medications for, say, a cholesterol problem or an even more serious condition. Here's where the most choices are to be made. Is the cheapest plan necessarily the best bet? Is the most highly rated plan necessarily the one to select? And what about plans that offer two "slightly" different options at "substantially" different prices? How should you go about selecting between the two? And with respect to any of the plans, are they irrevocable or can the individual who is now eligible for Medicare change his or her mind and select a different plan? If so, when can the decision be made? How often? Can I change my mind a 2nd, 3rd, 4th time, possibly returning to the plan I started with?

Barry's book enabled me not only to distinguish between the forest and the trees but to toss several stacks of information that I had previously torn out of magazines and/or downloaded from the internet. For the present, it's the only book you'll need about Medicaare--at once reducing some of the clutter and setting your mind at rest about all of those saved articles you had "intended" to read (just be careful not to do the same with this book!)

As good a book you're going to get on the subject.

The Medicare program is fairly complex; not that this is a criticism of the government. Heck, I have a 750-page camera manual. Things are just more complicated these days. This book answers most of the questions you might have about Medicare, and quite a few you didn't realize you may have. It's particularly helpful in discussing 'Advantage' plans, which if you've checked them out, may not be such an advantage, if you know about philanthropic plans, for example, those offered by many hospitals,non-profits, medical association and even pharmaceutical programs that can help the 'gaps' in medical care coverage--however, only if you meet economic need requirements.

For example, (and I'm only going to give one): Medicare doesn't pay for opthamology exams unless you've been diagnosed as potentially having a serious eye disease. But there's a way to get regular free exams if you know where to look (in this case the internet can be your friend). What I do recommend is that this book provides a lot of information, but if you are seriously deciding on various options (like pharmacy plans, 'medicap' plans, etc.) you should definitely have a calculator with you as you read.

Finally, if you are considering becoming a health care advocate, there is a section on ideas that are afoot to alter Medicare, which anyone that relies on it should be aware of. Let's face it. A book like this isn't so stimulating it's going to be optioned for a Hollywood movie, but it's a book you should grow familiar with until it's almost second nature (like learning the times table). It will help you be informed ahead of the time when you really need to be informed in case you have a major health issue.

Very thorough, but also clear (unlike everything else I've read so far). I finally feel like I understand Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, what's covered and what's not. Also very complete info for where to go when there's a problem. Worth every dime.

About the Author
MYRON MIXON was quite literarily born to barbecue. Raised in Vienna, Georgia,
his father Jack owned a BBQ restaurant which Myron helped run. His parents
started selling Jack's Old South BBQ Sauce, and after his father died in 1996,
Myron thought that by entering competitions he could sell some sauce. He was
hooked. He has appeared on the Today show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,
and the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson. KELLY ALEXANDER is a former
editor at Food & Wine and Saveur magazine, and her work has appeared in the
New York Times, the New York Times Magazine, Gourmet, and Newsweek,
amongst others. She also teaches food writing at Duke, and is a graduate of
Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism.

Not at the level I expected.

I bought this based on several reviews that gave high praise to the recipes and story of Mr. Mixon. I was expecting a lot more from these recipes, even though the book clearly says "simple" right on the front of it.
I get that Mr. Mixon is the "winningest man blah blah blah" and that his ego is understandably large. But, I don't want to read about how incredibly awesome this guy thinks he is when he provides zero recipes that back that up. I don't want to read a sales book that repeatedly says "use my xxx rub or xyz sauce that's available on my website" and gives a horrible alternative if you don't use his rub/sauce.
I don't know where the folks who gave this book 4 stars and such high praise have found their other bbq recipes. But I don't want those books either if "Smokin" is such a massive improvement.
The 3 recipes I've tried have been poor examples of BBQ. I've been smoking meat for 14 years and am not a novice.
If you want a great cook book, with a excellent story as well, buy Chris Lilly's book Big Bob Gibson BBQ. If you want a ton of recipes, simple to extreme (to test yourself), get Paul Kirks Championship bbq. You will be way better off without adding any of your hard earned money to the bank account of the über Q master. He's going to keep on kickin ass anyway, so he'll be fine.

Wanted a cookbook not a Myron Mixon is awesome sales brochure

I'm all for good stories, character, and backdrop but I didn't buy the book to have half it talking about how great Myron Mixon is. A whole sidebar talking about his trophy's or how much he's won? Why do I care? I didn't spend the money on the book so I could sit down, read, and have a Mixon love fest. I bought it to learn about smoking.

Also, a very basic rub recipe but then get the 'real' recipe by buying his stuff online. Very lame. I like to cook and what I was hoping for is some nice insight and recipes. There were some to be found but very very limited.

Great Book from the Master

He keeps it simple and real. I love the way the book flows as a cookbook and a story. As soon as you get into it, there's no doubt this is Myron's cookbook. His language is what you'd expect and it's absolutely appreciated.

There are a good number of recipes and all of which are easy to follow. I can't wait to try the cupcake chicken!

The best part is how he explains the different recipes and techniques. You may not agree with some of what he says, but he does.. and it's made him ton's of money.

What you'll find:
Recipes for Rubs , Marinade, Injections, Glazes and Sauces. All or most recipes of his famous dishes (ribs,cupcakes chicken, brisket, etc.)
Cooking temps and techniques (tools,types of wood, etc)
Super easy to follow recipes and real simple ingredients.
Great stories about Myron and his dad.
Good information about the BBQ competition circuit.

Who it's for:
Beginners/Intermediate/Pros

Beginners: You will learn some of basics and find easy to follow, awesome recipes.
Intermediates: My category. It will make you feel good. It will bring you back down to earth and remind you to not over-think the BBQ process.
Pros: Good info on the BBQ competitions. And of course, Myron's award winning recipes.

I'll update this review as I try out the different recipes.

Last week I tried the pork shoulder recipe. It called for an 18lb whole shoulder (picnic + boston butt I only had the butt (9lbs I followed the recipe to the letter, except I had to alter a bit because of the smaller cut of meat. I essentially did a 3-2-1 method at 275. I used all the ingredients from the recipe and in the end a perfect boston butt. It was moist and flavorful. Just perfect.
My setup: (not in the recipe WSM - 2 full chimney starter coals- apple and cherry chunks. water and apple juice in the water pan. google 3-2-1 method if you'd like more info (rib technique)

A lot of smoking since the last time I updated this review. So, here's the update:
Cupcake Chicken - It was a huge hit. Truly delicious but way too much work. I don't believe I'll be making these again, BUT I will definitely being using the glaze and rub in future chicken dishes.

I've done a few more pork butts. I've learned that without the Myron's injection recipe, it's not as good. Still delicious, but not as good.

I don't use pans either, sorry Myron. I only us a pan or wrap the meat in aluminum foil during the "2" part of the 3-2-1 method. 3 hours on the grill, 2 in an aluminum pan with apple juice, then 1 hour back on the grill spritzing every 15min.. Myron usually calls for the meat to be in the pan from start to finish. I'll adjust the 3-2-1 timing depending on the cut and size of meat.

Side note: I've tried a ton of different rub recipes. His basic BBQ rub is by far the best I've ever used, especially on Ribs. The only adjustment I make is cutting the cayenne pepper amount in half (the wife doesn't like too much heat)
