Myths about the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacres, 1572-1576, by Robert Kingdon

An epochal event in French history, the St. Bartholomew's Day religious massacres are still the subject of controversy. A leading historian of the early modern period, Robert Kingdon, writes about the reactions to the massacres that were published at the time, showing how the relatively new medium of print was used by the Protestants to shape reaction to the catastrophe an early example of the printing press as an agent of social and political change.

Kingdon describes the loosely connected network of printers in Geneva, Basel, Strasbourg, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, London, La Rochelle, and other cities that printed and distributed the grisly accounts of the murders of thousands of Protestants by Catholic zealots. But the pamphlets encompassed more than the making of martyrs. Some linked the massacres with an evil international conspiracy led by the French monarchy, Rome, and Spain. Others were political treatises arguing for a type of government that would no longer claim absolute power and would permit the survival of an ideological minority. Thus, the book contributes to an understanding of the history of printed propaganda and the role of myths in historical events, and illuminates important aspects of international diplomacy and political thought during the period of the later Reformation.

Masterful examination of the use of propaganda
By yosemiteexplorer
Stephen Hancock clearly did not even read this book before writing his review or he utterly misunderstood what he read. The book is not a revisionist history of the Masacre, nor is it even a history of the Massacre at all. It is rather, a scholarly work by one of the leading scholars of Calvinism in America that studies the post-Massacre propaganda produced by Huguenots.

The title of my review is in fact the opening sentence in Barbara Diefendorf's review of the book in the American Historical Review. Diefendorf, one of the most respected scholars in the area writing in one of the most respected journals in the field of historical studies, writes: "This book is a masterful examination of the use of propaganda in the French religious wars. Robert M. Kingdon takes as his point of departure the pamphlets and political treatises written in reaction to the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day."

Kingdon's contribution is to show how these pamphlets were transformed depending on the audience the author was addressing. He sees three main variants according to purpose. The first purpose was to keep the memory of the massacres alive. Second they were intended to "internationalize further the conflict" and, third, to challenge the very nature of the government.

The third point is important, as Kingdon is an expert on and scholar of Huguenot justifications for rebellion.

Hardly a revisionist history, Diefendorf's main criticism is in fact that Kingdon tends to accept the Huguenot propaganda a little too much at face value. That is to say, the one weakness she finds is that it is not revisionist enough.

Diefendorf's review is in the AHR, vol 94, n. 3 (June 1989), pp. 782-83

The Allies were worse than the Nazis
By Richard Davenport
and let us not forget how Eisenhower let over 1 million german soldiers die from starvation and the cruelty after World War II and also how how the Russian Gulags run by jews killed 4 million germans by raping, killing and torturing them to death, or the 245,000 Sudeten germans killed by the Czechs after World War II was over, by murdering women and children in the most horrific ways, or lest we forget the Allied blockade of Germany that killed over 80,000 german civilians after World War I was long over. Its time that people get the full story and not the stories that are shoved down our throats by the propagandists and globalists who want to paint anybody who is against the Allies as non-humans.

Underestimating Mass Murder?
By Stephen Hancock
For the most part, the revisionism that has been taking place in historical studies has been a good thing. Not only have long term questions like the guilt of Soviet spies Julius and Ethel Rosenburg The Rosenberg Fileand Alger Hiss Perjury: The Hiss-Chambers Case been proven beyond a doubt. Even FDR has been demoted from the savior of the Depression and mastermind of the victory in WWII to a barely competent leader who lengthened the recovery from the depression FDR's Folly: How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great DepressionNew Deal or Raw Deal?: How FDR's Economic Legacy Has Damaged America with his neo-fascist and socialist solutions, and did his best to involve the USA in WWII in spite of the American people's refusalThe New Dealers' War: FDR and the War Within World War II, and turned down an early surrender by Japan which would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives, and,at Yalta gave Stalin millions to murder and enslave Roosevelt's Secret War: FDR and World War II Espionage In Robert Kingdon's volume we get disinformation and supposition. Not only was the St.Bartholomew's massacre even worse than the mass murder reported The Rise of the Hugenots, Vol. 2 (of 2) , but it WAS a coup attempt on the part of the murderous Guise family faction of French nobilityCatherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France. Had the Guises never existed,it's probable that the French Wars of Religion would never happened. And if not for that, the Huguenots wouldn't have fled France en masse, perhaps even preventing the greater horrors of the French Revolution. I believe that even today France is STILL paying for it's brutal and indefensible slaughter of unarmed men, women and children (Most of whom were invited GUESTS of the King.)Christ's Churches Purely Reformed: A Social History of Calvinism Essentially, the Huguenots, like calvinists and other protestants in every society during the reformation period, were mostly peaceful, hard working middle class people (often merchants and shopkeepers) and only sought to worship in peace International Calvinism 1541-1715. Without a middle class, any society has only the tool of oppression to keep the working class in line, and this invariably leads to violence. To this day, France has a smaller Middle class than any European country. As John Wilkes Booth said after shooting Abraham Lincoln: "Sic Semper Tyrannus"-that is, "Thus always to Tyrants!"
