Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels, by Scott McCloud

Scott McCloud tore down the wall between high and low culture in 1993 with Understanding Comics, a massive comic book about comics, linking the medium to such diverse fields as media theory, movie criticism, and web design. In Reinventing Comics, McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today. Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character's facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand–in narrator, mixing dry humor and legitimate instruction. McCloud shows his reader how to master the human condition through word and image in a brilliantly minimalistic way. Comic book devotees as well as the most uninitiated will marvel at this journey into a once–underappreciated art form.

Amazon.com Review
Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics was published in 1993, just as "Comics Aren't Just for Kids Anymore!" articles were starting to appear and graphic novels were making their way into the mainstream, and it quickly gave the newly respectable medium the theoretical and practical manifesto it needed. With his clear-eyed and approachable analysis--done using the same comics tools he was describing--McCloud quickly gave "sequential art" a language to understand itself. McCloud made the simplest of drawing decisions seem deep with artistic potential.

Thirteen years later, following the Internet evangelizing of Reinventing Comics, McCloud has returned with Making Comics.

It gives you the basics.
By Kristen Brown
McCloud's book does not pretend to give you ALL of the answers, nor does it pretend to be a textbook or an all-encompassing guide. There are other, more expensive books for those purposes.

McCloud's book is engaging, thorough, concise, entertaining, and well-planned. It is clear that he put this together with a lot of passion and thought. The concepts are straightforward (if sometimes "dumbed-down" a bit), and he provides theories, concepts, and practical knowledge about making comics. This is a GREAT place for beginners.

To clarify, there are books out there about how to draw, but this is NOT one of them. This is designed to help you learn to tell a story using pictures, words, and impressions. There are drawing tricks and suggestions, but they are presented within the larger goal of teaching you to convey emotions and provide meaning. He does not give you a step-by-step guide of how to draw objects or people.

The emphasis of this book is to give you advice for flow, framing, transitions, angles, word use, combinations of words and pictures, and tools to need to provide a good balance of clarity and intensity so the reader will understand your meaning and empathize with it.

This book is a great place to start, it is a great reference, and his other books are also great references. If you want to kick your story up a notch, read Understanding Comics by McCloud, and use some of the tools he explains. It will allow you to use the tricks of the trade to convey deeper meaning.

Don't hesitate
By Jim
This book is outstanding and I'd rate it 10 stars if I could. I attended The School of Visual Arts in the late sixties and early seventies and took a course in humorous illustration there in the eighties, and as a freelance illustrator I've illustrated for some well-known publications. This book is a course unto itself of the highest quality - for the mere price of a book! It is packed with valuable information that would cost thousands to get in art school, and that's only if one were fortunate enough to have incredibly knowledgeable, dedicated teachers who are really skilled at teaching. In Making Comics you will not only learn about making comics but by virtue of the information McCloud gives about making comics, you should be able to infer a great deal about sequential visual art in general, and if you are so inclined you could then apply that to story-boarding, screenwriting, film-making, writing and illustrating children's books, etc. (I've been trying my hand at screenplay writing and though I didn't buy or expect this book to help me with that, it has helped me a great deal with that and I've found it more helpful than a few of the books on screenwriting I've read.)

The way Making Comics is laid out, you feel as if McCloud is right there with you on every page - and he is - not only as a wise teacher but as a friend. A book to be read and re-read and re-visited, that I can't recommend highly enough.

Invaluable Resource - Not Just for Artists!
By Poppins
I first came across this book in my junior year of college - it was assigned to my animation class as a textbook. When I opened it, I was caught off guard by the fact that the entire book is done in a comic format. As I read, however, the decision to teach visually could not have been more justified.

"Making Comics" is one of, if not the, best-written sources for understanding visual storytelling that the market has to offer. McCloud begins by explaining the nature of comics - what they are, what different kinds of comics there are - and branches into incredibly detailed coverage of every aspect of the process of creating a comic. McCloud walks the reader through the mechanics of comics (how to frame, write, and illustrate comics most effectively) into the more tricky technical area of facial expressions and how to draw them with clear, practical, and humorous voice. Often, he will illustrate the points he makes within his own comic panels, or in a didactic side panel next to his own commentary. McCloud's guidance extends to how words interact with the art, how to create believable settings, understanding the available tools for creating comics, and a final overview of understanding the world of comics and the many different genres they branch into.

To wit, this is a book I've returned to time and time again for reference - and I'm not a professional comic artist by any stretch. This is a valuable piece of reference material for anyone interested in storytelling, expression through visual means, and even some basic human psychology. Whether you're brand new to graphic novels or a longtime fan, this book will forever change how you experience comics in all their shapes and forms.

Review
'He was more than a psychological or scientific phenomenon; he was to my mind one of the greatest religious phenomena the world has ever experienced.' - Laurens van der Post 'His psychological approach is deeply interesting and should stimulate many who are today more ready to trust a doctor than a clergyman, to help them to rediscover the meaning of life.' - The Guardian 'Jung was the first to see that, of all the crises facing humanity, the lack of any sense of meaning in life is the crisis that guarantees all the rest. Whether the reader self-defines as modern, late modern of post-modern, the predicament that Jung lays out in bleak detail still strikes a chord. His suggestion that any possible solutions - political ecological, philosophical or religious - must include and respect elements of what lies deep within the psyche ('the soul') continues to challenge and to inspire.' - Andrew Samuels, Professor of Analytical Psychology, University of Essex 'This slim volume contains the quintessence of Jung's thinking. Originally published in 1933, it was the first readily accessible presentation in English of the great psychologist's basic ideas about psychotherapy, dream interpretation, psychological types, the stages of life and his differences with Sigmund Freud. His observations on the relationship between the "archaic man" and "modern man" anticipate those of contemporary evolutionary psychiatry, while his diagnosis of what alls western culture has been endorsed by subsequent history. An invaluable book for those seeking an introduction to Jungian psychology, expressed - with unusual clarity - in the master's own words.' - Anthony Stevens

Insightful Analytical Psychology
By R. Schwartz
A very insightful and meaningful book, 11 intriguing essays in 244 pages. Jung is a deeper thinker, and I think not reductive like Freud and Adler tended to be. He makes no claim to dogmatism or absolutes. Jung really hits on the psyche and transcends the borders of rational intelligence into areas of the unconscious expressions in symbolism and images.

I am going to argue against another reviewer here that gave this book 4 stars as being outdated. When I look at the present collective societal structure and current cultural pattern apart from the minority of advanced individuals, I can see the postmodern man has regressed far from the modern man of the 1930's in search of a soul. Of course there as been advances individually, but on a collective level; fundamentalism, religious literalism, nationalism, patriotism and one-sided thinking This has grown in major proportions as opposed to the other way around and it is far more serious than most even realize and patterns after historical events of very similiar nature.

The first essay on dream-analysis hits on the idea that dreams are very hard to interpret and suggests that understanding the circumstances and conditions of the conscious life is significant in relation to the dreams of the unconscious life.

On the problems of psychotherapy, Jung relates four stages of analytical psychology, the confessional, explanation, education and transformation

"The great decisions of human life have as a rule far more to do with the instincts and other mysterious unconscious factors than with conscious will and well-meaning reasonableness. The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases. Each of us carries his own life-form - an indeterminable form which cannot be superseded by any other." p. 61

The essay on the personality types is short, non-exhaustive and briefly relates Jung's ideas of the introvert, the extrovert and the 4 basic types consisting of those persons who are thinkers, feelers, sensory and intuitive.

In his essay on the stages of life, Jung ventures beyond childhood into early adulthood and the expansion of the self into sexual desires and masculine and feminine traits and how after somewhere in the 40's there begins a contraction of the self where men may acquire more feminine traits and women more masculine. In the second half of life less is needed to educate his conscious will but more aim towards the inner being, until old age where one leaves the rational self and retreats into the psyche as children yet in a different sense.

Jung acknowledges the validity of Freud and Adler and their valuable contributions, yet Jung sees Freud's sexual reduction to all neurosis as limiting, as well as Adler's will to power over inferiority as the sole cause. Both views have proven themselves as valid in many cases, yet Jung finds there is far much more levels in what he calls "value intensities," which underlie many complexes.

Jung also briefly goes into the archaic man's interpretation of all chance events having external meanings and causes, or as causal occurrences and the contrast of the modern man's ability to see the majority of chance and unexplainable events as the human imagination, as the perception of the human. Also the same ability of assumptions in the archaic man, can be seen in the modern who uses science as the foundation over the supernatural.

Jung's essay on psychology and literature is my favorite essay. It hits on something I both think of and am affected by almost every day. I found this entirely meaningful and very much profound. In this he writes of two types of writers; those that explain all they write of and those that have visions where their writing is obscure and needs the psychologist to read into. It is those visionaries that are the most inspiring. Here there exists those as in The Shepherd of Hermas, in Dante, in the second part of Faust, in Nietzsche's Dionysian exuberance, in Wagner's Nihelungenriing, in Spitteler's Olympischer Fruhling, in the poetry of William Blake, in the lpnerotomachia of the monk Francesco Colonna, and in Jacob Boehme's philosophic and poetic stammerings.

Jung speaks of the human intuition that points to things that are unknown and hidden, and by our very nature are secret and that throughout human history this unfathomable primordial source of creative experience been expressed in images, as in the sun-wheel, in attempting to point to this. The artist and poet will resort to mythology and images which only appear to occur in dreams, cases of insanity, narcotic states and eclipses of consciousness.

"A great work of art is like a dream; for all its apparent obviousness it does not explain itself and is never unequivocal. A dream never says; "you ought," or "this is the truth." It presents an image in much the same way as nature allows a plant to grow, and we must draw our own conclusions." p. 171

I really can't even begin to touch on all the vital, significant and soul inspiring information that is loaded in the pages of this book and I think as I try I am taking away from what's written far better than what I'll ever write. I recommend this book.

Soul searcing
By D. Roberts
I have always been deeply suspicious of the field of psychology. While I may not go so far as Richard Feynman did when he referred to them as the "modern day counterparts to witchdoctors," the discipline does make me rather nervous (if pushed to extremes).
That said, I have always respected Jung as an intellectually honest scientist. I may not agree with all his views, but I appreciate that fact that he is not the usual run-of-the-mill sterotyping pigeon-holer (as most psychologists are). His concept of the collective unconscious (whether it is correct or not) is rather fascinating. I do believe there is something to it, as these common archetypal images incessantly end up in our dreams and mythologies. It is not by chance that Joseph Campbell was so influenced by Jung's ideas as to incorporate many of them into his exegesis of mythology.
The present book is my all-time favorite book that is written in the psychology field. The book covers a diverse set of topics which Jung engages with his remarkable acumen. Some of the issues raised are the problems with psychotherapy, the contrasts between his views and those of Freud's (which led to their falling out), psychology and literature, and the spiritual problems of modern man.
One of the most interesting chapters of the book is entitled "Archaic Man." Jung details the psyche of tribes in such places as sub-Saharan Africa and New Guinea. Many of these cultures live the same way today that their ancestors lived thousands of years ago. Their psychological state, like their way of life, has been frozen in time. In essence, they are much the same as primitive man; the same as our own forefathers. Jung dicusses how they tend to explain everything via supernatural happenings. Much of the "reasoning" is anti-logic and extremely ad-hoc. However, Jung points out how such a dangerous and volatile envioronment as the jungle may coerce most anyone into thinking in ways which we "civilized" people would interpret as superstitous.
One of the underlying themes of the book is how we as a human race have become overly-logical today. It may be that primitive tribes may have something to teach us, after all. Somehow, we have descended into apathy after existing for thousands of years as a race that explained everything via the supernatural. This book is a wonderful dissection of the post-modern current state. It is highly recommend for any modern man in search of a soul.

The best place to start reading Jung
By Ross James Browne
_Modern Man in Search of a Soul_ is the first book you should read by Jung. That is not to say that it is particularly easy; it is by no means a watered-down layman's version of Jung. This is Jung at full intensity. It is an ideal introduction simply because it deals with his more accessable concepts, such as the actual practice of psychotherapy, the doctor-patient relationship, the types of things a doctor should say to his patients, ect. It also deals with broader sociological issues and does not get bogged down with esoteric concepts such as alchemy and ancient mythology. Overall, I would say this is a perfectly crafted philosophical/psychological work. It is potent, miserly, well-written, well-translated, and never gets bogged down with unreadable, esoteric sections. It is not as far-reaching and revolutionary as some of Jung's works, but it is a magnificent work of art pared down to the absolute essentials. Overall it is one of the top five books ever written, by any author, from any genre or time period. Also, as a side note, I would recomend _Psychotherapy East and West_ by the American author Alan Watts as a companion piece to Jung's _Modern Man in Search of a Soul_.

From Publishers Weekly
On May 29, 1453, Ottoman forces, under the leadership of Mehmet II, concluded their long and bloody siege of Constantinople by storming the city and overtaking it. According to Crowley, who works in publishing in England;the Ottoman conquest of the city brought to an end centuries of conflict between the Byzantine Empire and Islam. In overwhelming detail and colorless prose, Crowley chronicles the story of an ancient city and its attraction to members of two major religions. Before Mehmet's conquest, Constantinople had faced various unsuccessful sieges, and Crowley faithfully records them. The most destructive events came between 1341 and 1371, when earthquakes and the Black Death devastated the city, turning it into a forlorn series of villages. Although the Byzantine capital recovered enough of its former glory to entice Mehmet to its walls, even he felt tremendous disappointment, finding the city didn't live up to its reputation. Crowley drones through the day-by-day events of Mehmet's siege and the results of the conquest. Perhaps the author's most instructive point, made by others as well, is that Mehmet turned the city into one where religious toleration and multiculturalism flourished. (Aug. 10)

Review
"Crowley's fascinating account...reads more likely lively fiction...The characters, led by Mohammed II, the young leader of the Ottoman Turks, and Constantine XI, the wearying 57th emperor of a weakening Byzantium, are drawn in great detail from historical source material to bring them to life on the page."

About the Author
Roger Crowley was born in England and studied English at Cambridge University. After university, he taught English in Istanbul where he developed his interest in the city and its history. He has traveled widely throughout Turkey, including three journeys on foot across Western Anatolia, and has a working knowledge of Turkish. For the past fifteen years he has worked as a successful educational publisher for Nelson Thornes in Cheltenham, England.

"A red apple invites stones"
By Abba
While reading this book, you are not on your seat holding a book, you are living the events you are among the characters, I do not know what name to give this style but it is amazing!
The moment I started reading this book I was its prisoner, I could not put it down, for three consecutive hours I was reading until I fell asleep. Considering it is a history book full of detailed events, it is never boring. I was eager to see if when I continued reading the next day, if it will be also as exciting, it was till the end.
You will live the events of those days, the Ottoman art of war compared to the Europeans, the manufacturing of cannons, the logistics, army composition, new warfare guns and first use of Cannon battery formations for the first time in history, and their effect in the thousand years old walls of Constantinople, this vivid city that was in decline and disintegration which led to its defeat.
The book is so eventful that it is impossible to put down!

Read If You're Going to Istanbul
By Bmore
My son and I read the book on our way to Istanbul, and it was a terrific introduction. Definitely made a trip to walk the walls a necessity--a trek that is not that easy to do and requires some attention to personal safety. Anyway, Crowley can tell a story well and without it being too pedantic.
History buffs would thoroughly enjoy it.

How to use one flash and be happy!
By Jose Antunes
Books are a bit like people. You always learn a few different things with different people. The same happens with most books - and modernly also with eBooks, in whichever format they take. That's what I feel towards this book/eBook by Tilo Gockel. It gives you some new points of view concerning the use of flash, here reduced to its simplest expression: one light!

The theme of flash photography is not new to me. My collection of books on flash includes everything, from authors as Syl Arena to Joe McNally or less popular names from which I still learned a few tricks and essential tips. While I like them all and have learned a lot, I never refuse the experiences a new book offers me, sometimes unexpected challenges that will take my flash photography to a new level. This said, I will never dream of doing something as Joe McNally, which can use 40 flashes for a single shoot, so I prefer simple solutions, those provided by McNally and people like Syl Arena. That's where this book comes in: it preaches about one flash photography, something I really appreciate, as that's something I also preach on my workshops and photographic tour, where people usually will not carry a whole bank of lights but still want to get their pictures with the right amount of light. Some might find it is limiting, but I feel it is challenging, and great results can still be achieved, as Tilo Gockel shows in this book.

The title of the book attracted me because there is a challenge there, and also an important truth that many forget: making things simple enough so that even an amateur with a single flash can enjoy the discovering process of photography. In a world where so much about photography is presented as overly complex, or just as an automatic "correct it in post" thing, it is good to find books that show you there is a middle way, where understanding the technique is essential, but where you do not need to break the bank or take a degree to get professional results.

Through the "workshops" in the book Tilo Gockel teaches a lot of flash photography and photography in general. Not all of the lessons will appeal to all people, but there is plenty of choice and there is also a thing to remember: the setup for one specific subject can many times be adapted to other situations. The possibilities are infinite if you dare to try and expand on the knowledge available on these pages.

If you're curious about flash photography, there are many other books you can buy and I do advise you to do it. But whatever you do, buy this book, as it will both amuse you and challenge you. Some of the solutions provided are so "easy" that you'll soon find that, with Tilo Gockel as teacher, you've made a huge leap forward in your flash photography. Buy "One Flash" and read it from cover to cover, practicing each lesson as you go. And as we're around Christmas, consider this as the best gift you can give yourself so 2016 starts with you being better at using a single flash to enhance your visions of the world.

Adventures in Speedlight Photography
By Robert G. West
Tilo Gockel’s One Flash is a terrific book that will guide you through the use of a single flash unit to light a variety of subjects. The book begins with 3 brief mini-chapters that provide an overview of the use of flash, specific techniques for understanding flash, and a look at gear.
Gockel introduces the concept of utilizing a single flash with an effective analogy- the sun is generally the sole light in outdoor shooting, and it provides amazing variations of light. Can a single speedlight provide the photographer a similar, versatile source? Suppressing ambient light by exposing the subject before firing the flash starts the process- this will assure that ambient light is not affecting the flash exposure. The Aesthetics of Lighting section is especially interesting as it addresses proper light placement to shadows to define shape. The chapter also includes a superb 2-page description of portrait lighting patterns that are rarely described with eloquence and brevity. In describing gear, Gockel states “buy less, shoot more.” In a time where gear-envy and the daily onslaught of emails and web sites announcing the “new and improved” products, this is a refreshing change.

Gockel’s style of shooting is fairly consistent- take an initial shot without flash to establish the background exposure settings (usually -1EV) and then add the flash, attaining the desired main light via trial-and-error, metering, TTL or calculation with GN.

Bounce flash is well described, and Gockel quickly demonstrates the benefit of shooting in raw so as to be able to correct for color casts inevitable when bouncing light.

What follows the opening section are 3 chapters covering different photographic subjects (People, Objects, Food & Drink).

In People, ten “workshops” are presented. If you imagine taking a class on single flash photography, each workshop would be a different assignment that challenges you to try using flash in a different way. Whether it’s creating an evening scene in broad daylight or shooting through material to create shadow-patterns on subjects, the workshops are challenging and open-ended enough to allow for diverse projects on a single theme.

In addition to discussing flash techniques, Gockel presents excellent advice on generating the best bokeh with aperture settings. Equipment beyond the camera and flash are commonly discussed, but he is considerate of the reader’s budget, suggesting alternate approaches to the sometimes pricey gadgets.

Post production plays an important role of many of Gockel’s final people images, and while he does not discuss his post work in great detail, general descriptions of his processes are helpful to those who want to go the extra distance in perfecting their images. While many of the People images are excellent, some definitely display the limitation of using a single light source as high contrast differences on the sides of the face can be detracting (or stylistic, depending on your POV).

Part 2 examines photographing objects. Some of this becomes very complex, such as the need to focus-stack images that are small (jewelry) to capture the required DOF. Here the lighting takes a back seat to the post production in many of the workshops. The workarounds for having a single flash also become more complex, as light painting small objects becomes an art unto itself as you attempt to capture the subject in the best artificial light. Creativity in lighting is key to photographing inanimate objects, and Gockel’s descriptions of his experiments with circuit boards is fascinating and, well, illuminating.

Part 3 is similar to 2, but specifically addresses the challenges of photographing food and drink. Most interesting are the many tricks used for this type of photography- like pre-treating beer bottles to retain water droplets for longer periods of time. As in chapter 2, back lighting again plays a major role in photographing inanimate objects, especially those that are translucent.

Part 4 is brief and describes stroboscopic effects, using an on-camera flash as a bounce flash using a mirror, and an ill-advised DIY merger of two flash tubes into something of a single unit- that should be for the electrically-qualified only!

This is a great book, especially for someone familiar with and comfortable with their speedlight and interested in exploring creative utilization of their tools. There are a few nuances- the author is from Germany and will occasionally reference gear that is not to be found in the US. And despite the fact that mirrorlesss cameras have become more popular, the book is solely Nikon/Canon referenced. Despite these minor issues, this book will challenge most photographers to grow and become more competent in their creative use of single flash photography.

A Joy to Read and Use
By meg
Wow! If you are looking for a comprehensive handbook on minimalism, decluttering, streamlining, and essentially re-wiring your preconceptions about why you have the stuff you have, this is the book for you.

Francine Jay, aka Miss Minimalist to those in her blogosphere, has written The Joy of Less, A Minimalist Living Guide: How to Declutter, Organize, and Simplify Your Life, her second book on achieving the good life by consuming less. She's a minimalist after my own heart, and unless I'm projecting too much of my own experience onto hers, appreciates the epiphany one gets by suddenly having lots of space and just a few true treasures. Francine starts right out with the mindset, the philosophy/attitude one needs to have before seriously tackling a reduction in clutter and possessions, likening this important step to changing one's eating habits as opposed to simply going on a diet. If you don't get in the mindset, you'll just backslide. I know all too well what she means by this, having done binge-purge decluttering several times over the course of my adult life until a few years ago.

This book is a well-structured, wholesale plan of attack, as opposed to loads of personal stories or autobiography. Part One tackles the the relationship we have to our stuff and why we think we have to own it. As Francine puts it: "In pursuing a minimalist lifestyle, we need to resist the temptation to recreate the outside world within our abodes." She then cites examples such as media rooms and bathroom "spas," and the dreaded home cappuccino makers. Oh yes. The section concludes with her challenge to make a list of every single thing you own-right down to every single thing in every single drawer. My brain wanted scream at the prospect of doing that-AND I've already decluttered!!! The woman isn't taking prisoners.

Part Two is entitled STREAMLINE, and each letter of that word stands for a step in the author's minimalizing process. We are to remember that "the idea is not to choose the things we'll get rid of, but to choose the things we'll keep." This perspective turns the usual decluttering process on its head, by literally getting everything out of each room and only bringing back in the most essential, and the most worthy of our precious time and space. This section is the strategy session before the big game, as it were, illustrated by some of the many quote-worthy passages:

...the things with which we choose to surround ourselves tell our story...

...take responsibility for the entire life cycle of what we buy...(from how it was made to how it will need to be disposed of)

Think of all the things we can't do when our surfaces are cluttered:we don't have room to prepare a delicious dinner, we don't have a place to sit down with our families and enjoy it, and we don't have the space to play a board game afterwards. We don't have a spot to pay our bills, do our homework, or enjoy our hobbies. In some cases, we may not even have a place to lie down at the end of the day.

Re books: Perhaps the bigger our library, the more intellectual we feel.

Re crafts (and this one made me feel the pain): ...reality check: do you enjoy doing the craft as much as collecting the materials for it? If not, perhaps you should rethink your hobby....

One of the concepts Francine writes about is the idea of Limits, and it is here that I sense the heart of her minimalist passion:

you may initially think that limits will be stifling; but you'll soon discover that they're absolutely liberating! In a culture where we're conditioned to want more, buy more, and do more, they're a wonderful breath of relief...you'll be inspired to apply them to other parts of your life...the possibilities are, well...unlimited!

Part Three is the down to brass tacks stuff, sectioned room by room, and while the methodology of uncluttering each room is pretty much the same, there's plenty of perspective on the specifics, such as, when uncluttering our wardrobes, we wonder how we acquired so many unwearable things:

...often, such excess is the result of chasing perfection....

The "chasing perfection" also applies to buying grooming and beauty products which promise perfection, and sucker us in every time. There's also lots about how to keep on top of clutter, especially the clutter created by family members who are not yet with the program. A firm but gentle persistence is urged, and with the hope that once there's not so much crap laying around, it'll be fairly easy to keep on top of things, and thus easier to get the rest of one's household to participate of their own free will. This is the other usefulness of preparing your mindset before actually tackling minimalism-it will help you resist the laggards in your own family as well as the pressures of a consumerist society.

Part Four considers life outside of your home in your schedule and in the impact on the world by your purchases/lack of purchases. Francine encourages us to apply the word "No" with courage even if we are naturally people-pleasers, in order to retain time for ourselves and for the most important things in our lives. She also, in a telling autobiographical example, encourages us to embrace the concept of "good enough:" when her young inner-perfectionist self stared in horror at carpeting her husband hadn't quite perfectly laid he said, "it's good enough." Fortunately the message got through and she's embraced it ever since, as should we.

A greater mindfulness about what we purchase and consume leads in turn to better things for the world around us, as we consider what something is made of, who has made it, how it is packaged, and how it can be recycled or disposed of when its usefulness is over. Francine adds to these benefits the beauty of sharing possessions and of setting a happy example of treading lightly on the earth as "minsumers," her own word for minimal-consumers. She concludes that sometimes minimalism can feel like swimming upstream, but the personal liberation we will feel once we step back from consumerism will be enough to sustain us and gently inspire those around us.

A Kick in the Butt
By ejw2010
This book is what it is. It's not fantastic literature, it's not a scientific inquiry into the psychology of possession, it's not verbatim compliance requiring instructions on how to live like a buddhist monk. Some reviewers seemed a little confused, so I thought I'd clarify. It's a series of clear and helpful guidelines, with convincing reasoning, to help people get rid of their excess STUFF.

The first part covers the "philosophy" of "minimalist living". What it did for me was indicate that simply because I love my dearly departed grandfather, and respect my still living grandmother, does not mean that I have to keep their collection of wine bottles on the off chance that, for the first time in the 10 years since I acquired them, I might ferment up a batch of home made wine. This is obvious to anybody who reads it, but the point is it was not obvious to me until I read the first section in the book. The other "kick in the butt" for me was my horrible "just in case" collections. Because a time could come when I may never be able to buy a regular sized bottle of shampoo, I had to hoard the hotel samples from business trips. Again, written down this is obvious - to everybody but me until now. I also don't have to keep thinks I bought just because I spent money on them, and don't have to keep things I was given out of respect for the givers, and don't have to keep... Really, anything. The "philosophy" section in a way gave me permission to purge, dump, donate, sell all that which does not totally delight me. Purging STUFF from my house does not mean I have less love for the giver, less money in the bank, fewer memories of my past, or fewer opportunities in the future. Thank god. It just means I'll have less STUFF.

The second part is a room by room set of guidelines using 10 "steps" (more like ideas) to eliminate clutter, hopefully permanently. She uses the acronym STREAMLINE, which is cute and apt, but I find it hard to remember them all. Though I do like the itemized and very clear guidelines, I'm finding that the inertia alone from the epiphany of the first part is keeping me going on this spring purging. While not all the suggestions will work for everybody, I find the suggestions like to ditch the highschool/college yearbooks fantastic. The problem I've had is that for all my STUFF, the only voices in my life (and head), have said "oh, you have to keep THAT, you can't get rid of THAT, of course not!". This book is a gleaming beacon of light in that dark chorus of packrats (it's easy to require hoarding when it's not your own space that's filling). Purge. Dump. Eliminate. It's ok.

The environmental section was all old news to me (live simply that others may simply live? yup), the schedule section was interesting (eliminating clutter in the To Do list is not so that one can accomplish MORE, it's to create completely free time, in which one may just BE - that's very zen, and helpful to me).

I would like to warn people - the battle to eliminate stuff is not an instant win, even with such clear directions. The weekend after purchasing and reading (cover to cover) this book, I dove in, hauling away three packed carloads of things to donation, recycle, and sell. Arrived back at the house to find very little visible change. I think once we donate the increasingly empty furniture that used to house the STUFF, it will feel a little better, but that Sunday night was rough. Perusing the philosophy section of the book helped recover the positive momentum though, and the purging continues. For us, this is not a sprint but a distance race, and this book is helping tremendously.

This is a wonderful book!
By Beth Aronson
I've read various books and articles on how to reduce clutter but none of them have spoken to me like "The Joy of Less, A Minimalist Living Guide: how to get rid of clutter and simplify your life" by Francine Jay. This book deals with every aspect of wiping out clutter and living a simpler, joyous life. Francine Jay writes about the issue both from a philosophical and practical perspective. The book is written in a way that makes it seem as though the author is talking to you, with kindness and yet with authority. This is what I needed! Jay shows you how to get started right away and then leads you through the process, step by step, room by room, giving solutions for every aspect of decluttering and simplifying your life.

The author offers solutions that are totally realistic and doable. I am amazed at the progress I have made from reading this book. My closet is now half empty and my kitchen counters are clean and free of clutter! I think that is because the book has also helped me change my way of thinking, helping me to move from a place of uncertainty to one of confidence as I go through this process. I highly recommend it!

The Wander Society, by Keri Smith

From the internationally bestselling creator of Wreck This Journal...

wan·der
verb  \ˈwän-dər\
to walk/explore/amble in an unplanned or aimless way with a complete openness to the unknown

Several years ago when Keri Smith, bestselling author of Wreck This Journal, discovered cryptic handwritten notations in a worn copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, her interest was piqued. Little did she know at the time that those simple markings would become the basis of a years-long, life-changing exploration into a mysterious group known only as The Wander Society, as well as the subject of this book.

Within these pages, you’ll find the results of Smith’s research: A guide to the Wander Society, a secretive group that holds up the act of wandering, or unplanned exploring, as a way of life. You’ll learn about the group’s mysterious origins, meet fellow wanderers through time, discover how wandering feeds the creative mind, and learn how to best practice the art of wandering, should you choose to accept the mission.

Praise for The Wander Society

“Thanks to Smith's compilation of notes, observations, and musings, readers will have no difficulty incorporating these ideas into a daily routine [and] will have a fun time away from the hubbub of modern life. . . . The amusing and informative philosophy of a hidden culture that proposes that wandering is the key to a soulful life.” —Kirkus Reviews

“If you are looking for a respite from a hectic, busy life and wish you had more time to think and explore the world around you, The Wander Society might just be able to help. . . . The philosophy is sound and inspiring, and the writing draws you in.  You will find several helpful hints that will help you slow down the world around you just a little.” —Real Style Magazine

“The Wander Society truly is for everyone, and I have the feeling everyone can do with it what they want and as they please. . . .  Any book that encourages a reader not only to interact with the physical item ‘book’ but also with their surroundings in a playful and creative way while walking is a good book; of which too few are being published at the moment.  It is good to know that the Wander Society is out there.” —Elsewhere Journal

“While Smith gathers what she has discovered of the invisible Wander Society, the unanswerable questions of who and why begin to lose their importance. Planted, instead, is the seed of an inspiring and creative way of life: one tied not to technology and societal norms, but rather married to the more romantic notions of morality, curiosity, and discovery.” —Literary Inklings

“As someone who has been becoming more and more disenchanted with technology and how social media seems to rule everything around us, this book couldn't have come at a more perfect time. . . . The Wander Society really, really struck a chord with me and was exactly the encouragement I needed to get out and do more of what I really love.” —The Dainty Squid

“Amazingly creative. . . . If you’re a traveler like I am, this is a great gift to yourself (or another fellow traveler). Let it inspire you to let go of agendas on your next trip and just see where a path (beaten or unbeaten) will take you.” —Nancy D. Brown, What a Trip

“The Wander Society is inspiring and an act needed in our society today. It talks of slowing down, taking time, imagining, and living simply.” —Luxury Reading

“Part philosophical memoir, part investigative journalism, The Wander Society is a book unlike any I’ve ever read. It packs a hearty punch and truly left me inspired to go out and do some wandering of my own!” —The Pretty Good Gatsby

“The book is designed with an eye to portability. You can take it on your wanderings. . . . If you are inclined to or curious about wandering, I recommend The Wander Society.” —The Local Ecologist

“Different people will respond to different elements of The Wander Society. There are lists, there are diagrams, there are poems, there are assignments. They all encourage you towards a common goal: to let go, start wandering in your daily life, and see what happens.” —Reading Rambo

“There is something mysterious and deeply powerful about the ideas in this book: it deals with the exploration of not just the environment and your community, but inner exploration: an exploration of your own imagination and unconscious. . . . a fascinating and exciting book.” —Cats and Chocolate

The Wander Society - are you a member?
By Aleta Karstad
A whimsical exposition of an idea that has long been central to our philosophy... it is exciting to see how many beloved writers and naturalists from yesteryears were also "members" of the Wander Society (unbeknownst to them). My first impulse on receiving my copy was to buy more to have on hand to give to kindred spirits.

A fun book that is also a bit mysterious!

I love this book! I really like it's simplicity and her easy "how to make" projects. I keep it with me everywhere I go. I'm ordering some as Christmas presents for my "Wander" friends and family. If you love adventure in a low key way read and enjoy Keri Smith's The Wander Society.

I felt like I had finally found belonging in a group of ...
By poppyinthesun
When I first received the book I was completely intrigued. I felt like I had finally found belonging in a group of like minded people where I had always seen myself as alone in my habits of wandering in nature and following my curiosity. I was also very intrigued by the unfolding of Keri's discovery of this secret group. My investigative nature kicked in and I could not stop asking questions about the origins of this mysterious society. I noticed that all of the drawings on the wander society website looked familiarly like Keri's past instruction sheets in her previous books. And then I researched the origins of the website. It was created in 2015. I felt the joy and curiosity drain from my face. This means that Keri created the website herself. I have to wonder if the whole story is just that.. A story. While I still find companionship in the philosophy of the book I must admit I feel a sense of loss as well. Sure people have been packaging stories as truth for many years. But this one hit me harder than I wanted.
