After 30 years in print, the most reliable single source of information on the city's buildings of all periods and styles
From Nash's elegant crescents to Lubetkin's uncompromising high-rise blocks, from Wren's churches to the Victorian Byzantine of Westminster Cathedral, from the Roman city wall to St. Pancras International, this updated guide offers a critical appraisal of London's architecture. More than 1,000 entries are all arranged chronologically within geographical sections, and clearly pinpointed on corresponding maps. Each section opens with a summary of the architectural and social history of the area, while a general introduction gives a concise century-by-century history of London's architecture from the time of the Roman occupation to the present. Clear and detailed time charts show the development of major trends and influences. Other special features include a series of plans outlining the development of the London squares from 1650 to 1900.

From Library Journal
This is an updated and enlarged edition of this guide, first published in 1983. It now contains entries describing approximately 1000 buildings, streets, or areas in London, arranged by city section. Coverage concentrates on the center, with "only exceptional" buildings from outer London included. A brief but informative introduction outlines London's architectural history since Roman times, and entries for each area are listed in chronological order, accompanied by a small black-and-white photo. The brief descriptions point out significant features and provide a refreshing frankness that reflects the opinions of the authors (both architects) on various architectural styles. The detailed area maps and index also ensure the book's usefulness as a tour guide. Highly recommended for architectural and travel collections in both public and academic libraries. Review
The commentary manages to be both informative and conversational, making it just as good a meander in an armchair as on the streets. THE GOOD BOOK GUIDE

Going to London
By George W. Mead
A fine book. Perhaps a little too detailed for what I wanted. Going to London with an architect. Should be useful.

A wonderful guide
By Hippomenes
Best edition yet. I still have the first edition from 30 years ago and the development of London in those three decades is fascinating and faithfully captured.
