About the Author

Dr. J. Gordon Leishman holds the Minta Martin Chair of Engineering and is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland. A former aerodynamicist at Westland Helicopters, Dr. Leishman has written extensively on topics in helicopter aerodynamics and helicopter technology. He is also the author of the popular textbook Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics, now in its second edition. Dr. Leishman is a Technical Fellow of the American Helicopter Society, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has also served as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of the American Helicopter Society.

The Helicopter: Thinking Forward - Looking Back

This book was a pleasure to read. It presents an overview of recent rotor aerodynamic, acoustic and aeromechanical research and development and its application to the design of the overall vehicle, in simple and graphic terms that can be readily comprehended by people with little detailed knowledge of the helicopter.

Accuracy has not suffered from the simplification process - the book's author, Prof Gordon Leishman, is one of the foremost researchers and experts in the rotorcraft field. He has used this expertise to explain the technology so that its logic is readily apparent. He also provides a very useful list of easily obtained references for deeper reading.

But the book is much more than a guide to the technicalities of rotorcraft engineering, since it places the engineering and research topics into the context of the overall aircraft design and deals with how they affect the fundamentals of the vehicle's performance. The book contains a considerable amount of overall generalised performance data that gets to the core of what the helicopter is and what it offers to its customers and perhaps more important, what limits its performance and how its capabilities can be transformed by application of advances in technology.

The book does not shirk from looking at the problem of how technology comes into being and is incorporated into the vehicle, either. The author reviews the success of recent trends in applying the technology to improving the vehicle and draws some uncomfortable conclusions. He then proposes strategies for improving results.

As an engineer familiar with the field, I found this book very enjoyable and read it in one session. I discovered a few aspects of the subject that were new to me, but most important to me were the thought provoking questions on the development of the vehicle and the industry that the book raised.

This is a good book in learning about the many technical challenges that face the helicopter as an engineering system. A good amount of discussion shows the many tradeoffs and competing requirements which pose significant challenges in revolutionizing the helicopter. Attention is also given to our limited ability to understand the complex aperiodic nature of the flow, along with the complex interaction effects between the main rotor, tail rotor, and fuselage. Next, the book discusses flow control methods along with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) taking on a more active role in helicopter design and analysis. The book ends with the over-arching emphasis of setting realistic government goals that radically shifts the conventional way of thinking on how helicopters are made. If the helicopter is to have drastic performance changes, the government, academia, and industry have to team together for the benefit of all.

About the Author

Luke Cascarini is a consultant Oral and Maxillofacial, Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon at The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust and also honorary consultant at both The Royal Marsden Hospital and The West Middlesex University Hospital. His special interests are the surgical management of mouth cancer, in particular complex reconstruction. Luke is an associate editor of the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has co-authored a surgical textbook on principles of surgery, and has written a number of chapters and published and presented numerous articles.

Claire Schilling studied medicine in London and did not come across the specialty of OMFS until her pre-registration year where she happened to share a ward with the Maxillofacial team. Fascinated by what she saw them doing, she secured her first SHO job in Maxillofacial surgery. Claire thoroughly enjoyed working in OMFS and then went on to complete her basic surgical training and although she enjoyed all the more 'traditional' surgical specialties she still kept coming back to OMFS. She decided to take the plunge and went to study dentistry as a mature student and was delighted to find several like-minded medics along the way. It seems the 'medicine first' route is becoming more common every year. Since qualifying in dentistry she has entered a Specialist Training program for OMFS and can honestly say that she hasn't looked back once. It is a longer training pathway than most but it is definitely worth it.

Ben Gurney trained at Edinburgh Medical School before completing basic surgical training in the North East of England. It was during his second year of the BST that he was exposed to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery whilst working in ITU and looking after head and neck cancer cases that had undergone major surgery. Ben was lucky to be appointed as an OMFS SHO at Sunderland Royal Hospital where he had a wonderful year of training and a thorough introduction to OMFS. It also opened up a world of oral, dental, and facial surgery that, as a medical graduate, had remained a complete mystery. Having been inspired to pursue a career in OMFS, Ben completed a second undergraduate degree in dentistry at Kings College London, and he is now now a specialty OMFS trainee with the London Deanery.

Peter Brennan is a consultant Oral and Maxillofacial, Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. He is also honorary Professor of Surgery. He has been a consultant for eight years and has clinical interests in the management of head and neck cancer, salivary gland disease, and microvascular free tissue transfer. In addition to a busy clinical practice, Peter is committed to research and education. He is currently the honorary editor of the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and is on the editorial board of other journals. He is an author on nearly 200 peer reviewed papers and supports trainees at all levels. He teaches worldwide, particularly in India on a regular basis.

About the Author

Great introductory resource

This is a great introductory resource to the nonprofit sector, and specifically, the subsectors within the field. For the reviewer that gave 1 star, due to what he describes as out of date statistics, you probably didn't read the book. That is because most of the statistics are used to show consistent trends in the sectors--it's the type of publication that could probably be updated every 10 years, but the stats are accurate and easy to read and use. I think this text would ring true to nonprofit professionals, and give some insight to folks considering a career in the field. It provides good historical and contemporary info on the fields, it's a straightforward and easy read, and it's a must for professionals in the nonprofit field. I think it would also be helpful to board members--especially new board members.

A good representation of the nonprofit sector

Had to read this book for a graduate class. It was a decent enough read but I wish there was a more relevant updated version available as most of the data and examples are about 15 years old. I would agree with another reviewer and think that it would be great to use this book to look at trends in the nonprofit sector as we entered the new millennium. It also has a good list of references at the end to refer to for further research. Overall, I think this book does a fairly good job providing a representation of the nonprofit sector then and now and I expect I will be referring back to it for concepts and ideas in the future.

Best. Ever.

This is the book that taught me how to cook! My mom had given me a copy years ago when I was first on my own. I loved it, it is so informative. Not only does it include many recipes (yes, some of them are a bit dated, but I actually kind of like that about it.) but it includes so many tips, instructions, etc that are really pretty indispensable and that are not included in most cookbooks. Sure, most cookbooks include a chapter on equipment, terminology, and maybe even some instruction on heating sources and techniques, but this goes beyond that. This where I learned how to break down a whole chicken (cheaper than buying it already cut up), how to carve meats, how to pick out fruits and veggies, how to prevent dry turkey, how to cook different cuts of meat the best ways, and the green bean casserole recipe (NOT the mushroom soup fried onion dish most know by this name) is still my favorite way to prepare green beans.
The newer versions omit a lot of the information I found so helpful, with perhaps the exception of the anniversary edition (I have heard, anyway). I lost my copy years ago, so when I saw my favorite edition for sale on Amazon I was truly excited! The book is in very good edition, some light staining around the very edges of the book that may just be from aging paper. I am very impressed with the condition of the book.
