Not only for asthma, but also for colds, flus, and much, much more

If you've tried other breathing methods or yoga and found them too complicated or time-consuming, not to worry, the Buteyko Method is so simple that even children can learn it. And they do. In this book you'll learn how to do it yourself, at home. What's here is more than enough to get you started and give you a real foundation in the method. Using the easy-to-follow instructions in the book, in under 3 minutes, I cleared a stuffy nose and went to bed breathing freely and easily for the first time in days. And you do this sitting down, with no pills or sprays or anything. On top of that, by breathing this way, you focus better and your energy stays balanced much longer. For example, I used to feel sleepy after lunch, and would find myself yawning and ready to doze off for a nap. Now I follow the instructions in the book, and in less than 5 minutes, I am rested and ready to go. Another very nice benefit is feeling great upon waking every morning, even after having just six hours of sleep.

Works for sleep apnea too.

The information in this book is very powerful. It is also counterintuitive until you understand Dr. Buteyko's discoveries. For the past 20 years I have worn out three CPAP machines and a dental appliance trying to relieve my diagnosed severe sleep apnea condition. I believe the condition and the CPAP machines caused me to undergo three heart catheter ablation operations for persistant atrial fibrillation. After only three weeks using the information in this book along with some personal consultations with the author I am now breathing normally and free from using dental appliance gizmos and CPAP contraptions while sleeping. It is key, as another reviewer has said, that you do the exercises and follow instructions.

This book really helped me!

This is a very unique publication containing original texts by Dr. Buteyko. There are also texts by three other medical professionals explaining why and how the Breathing Normalization method works. The book offers step-by-step instructions on how to improve your breathing. To me it was extremely useful. I was able to stop most of my asthma trouble by following recommendations in this book. Anyone who has asthma can benefit enormously by reading this book.

About the Author
Karma Yeshe Rabgye is a monk in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally from England, he now lives in a monastery in northern India. He conducts English, basic Buddhism and meditation classes for monks of all ages. Yeshe has studied with HH the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, HH the Seventeenth Karmapa, and many other prominent Buddhist lamas. He also helped found the Sangye-Menla Patients Charitable Trust, a non-profit organisation and hostel in Chandigarh, in 2008.

Clear and concise --- a contemporary introduction to the Buddha's teachings

As a student and practitioner of Buddhism, I welcome Venerable Karma Yeshe Rabgye's clear and concise introduction to the central teachings of the Buddha.

His text covers the Four Seals, the Four Noble Truths, and the Four Preliminary Thoughts and includes appendices on the various schools of Buddhism and a short biography of the life of the Buddha.

Overall,Ven. Karma Yeshe Rabgye presents the subject matter in a way that allows a contemporary reader to relate the teachings to his/her life. At various points, the text invites the reader to think about different aspects of the material by posing questions that are intended for further reflection. Furthermore, Ven. Karma Yeshe Rabgye draws on a broad variety of scriptures that belong to various traditions of Buddhism to illustrate and support the claims he makes. Though he clearly identifies his own perspective (the Karma Kagyu tradition), he embraces the wisdom that is found in the writings of other schools of Buddhism as well. Contemporary references and a sense of humor make "The Best Way to Catch a Snake" pleasant to read and easy to follow.

The only suggestion I have is that, in the next edition, the list of sources that appear in the bibliography section be expanded to include all of the texts that are mentioned in the book. Doing so will allow the reader to follow up on the various canonical writings much more easily.

In summary, "The Best Way to Catch a Snake" is a clear and concise introduction to the principles of Buddhism that is intended for a general reader. I would certainly consider including it in an introductory course on Buddhism that is taught at the college or university level.

Each chapter is very short. Only 1-2 labs on each chapter which contain only source code without comment and then just end with screenshot of result of the lab. Fallingwater Rising is a biography not of a person but of the most famous house of the twentieth century. Scholars and the public have long extolled the house that Frank Lloyd Wright perched over a Pennsylvania waterfall in 1937, but the full story has never been told.

When he got the commission to design the house, Wright was nearing seventy, his youth and his early fame long gone. It was the Depression, and Wright had no work in sight. Into his orbit stepped Edgar J. Kaufmann, a Pittsburgh department-store mogul–“the smartest retailer in America”–and a philanthropist with the burning ambition to build a world-famous work of architecture. It was an unlikely collaboration: the Jewish merchant who had little concern for modern architecture and the brilliant modernist who was leery of Jews. But the two men collaborated to produce an extraordinary building of lasting architectural significance that brought international fame to them both and confirmed Wright’s position as the greatest architect of the twentieth century.

Fallingwater Rising is also an enthralling family drama, involving Kaufmann, his beautiful cousin/wife, Liliane, and their son, Edgar Jr., whose own role in the creation of Fallingwater and its ongoing reputation is central to the story. Involving such key figures of the l930s as Frida Kahlo, Albert Einstein, Henry R. Luce, William Randolph Hearst, Ayn Rand, and Franklin Roosevelt, Fallingwater Rising shows us how E. J. Kaufmann’s house became not just Wright’s masterpiece but a fundamental icon of American life.

One of the pleasures of the book is its rich evocation of the upper-crust society of Pittsburgh–Carnegie, Frick, the Mellons–a society that was socially reactionary but luxury-loving and baronial in its tastes, hobbies, and sexual attitudes (Kaufmann had so many mistresses that his store issued them distinctive charge plates they could use without paying).

Franklin Toker has been studying Fallingwater for eighteen years. No one but he could have given us this compelling saga of the most famous private house in the world and the dramatic personal story of the fascinating people who made and used it.

Architectural historian Toker (Pittsburgh: An Urban Portrait) approaches the building as a tense but fruitful collaboration between Wright's genius and the encouragement given it by his patron, Pittsburgh department store magnate E. J. Kaufmann, whom Toker credits with being "almost... the coarchitect" of the house. He gives a detailed, sometimes hour-by-hour account of Wright's planning process, the engineering hurdles surmounted in realizing his structurally daring design, the critical and public acclaim the house has elicited through the years and its impact on American culture in everything from Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead to motifs in suburban tract housing. When a house becomes a celebrated work of architecture, it tends to be treated as if it had sprung full-grown from the brow of its creator. Probably no house has been more subject to this myth than Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's extraordinary essay in horizontal space, which is perched above a waterfall in southwestern Pennsylvania. According to legend, Wright dallied for months after receiving the commission, then drew up the plans in just two hours, as his client, the Pittsburgh department-store magnate E. J. Kaufmann, was en route to Wright's studio to check on his progress. Toker makes quick work of this fiction, tracing the long, careful evolution of Wright's brilliant design. Most important, he tells the story of Kaufmann and his wife, and shows that the house was equally a reflection of these two strong-willed clients and their complex marriage.

Conceived and built in the years 1935-37, this stunning weekend retreat's high-profile owner (department-store tycoon Kaufmann) and celebrity architect (Wright) guaranteed it would never be a well-kept secret. Fallingwater has already been the subject of numerous books, but Toker adds important new scholarship in debunking or clarifying four myths: that E. J.'s son, Edgar Jr., was father to the project; that Wright drew the complete plans in a two-hour burst of creativity; that Wright demonstrated engineering genius in his design; and that the world "spontaneously acclaimed it as the crowning achievement of modern architecture." If these points seem like insider quibbles, Toker also provides histories of the site, the men (Wright was in desperate need of a comeback when he got the commission), the house's chaotic construction, and the manner in which it became a byword even to architecture neophytes. An Instructive Book That Establishes the Gold Standard

This book is an extraordinary education in the many facets of early twentieth-century American life and international architecture that bear on a house in the forest that has become a lasting treasure for devotees of Frank Lloyd Wright, a testament to his genius, and a gift to the traditions from which it borrowed and synthesized. Its author-Franklin Toker-has evidently read, observed, and digested everything that could have possibly influenced the building of this world-famous house. Whether carefully detailing the twists and turns of modernist architecture, reviewing the "social vaulting" strategy of E.J. Kaufmann and his family among the regional elite in the Pittsburgh area or musing over the influence and legacy of Wright's anti-Semitism, whether explaining the structural features of the building itself, pointing to the progenitors of its design in Wright's earlier work and that of his some of his contemporaries or demonstrating how Wright beat the Internationalists at their own game, Toker is ever the entertaining instructor assiduously and judiciously separating out fact and fiction, complex verities and simplistic myths in order to tell a story that generously enlarges everyone in this venture. By the end of the book, the reader has been profoundly changed by Toker's odyssey, enriching both her or his outlook on this architectural masterpiece and appreciation for the genius who designed it. No less rewarding, the reader has been taken on a voyage through the life and times of a powerful and beguiling client who proved himself equal to the tasks of commissioning such a unique blend of modernist and vernacular elements and challenging its architect to meet the demands of producing a work that has drawn such popular and scholarly acclaim.

Interesting Read

Professor Toker has written an informative and interesting book not only explaining the history of Falling Water, but the dynamics between the merchant/architect Kauffman, and Frank Lloyd Wright the architect/merchant.
The book is well researched as is evident by all the tidbits of information not found in other previous works on this remarkable building.
I highly recommend this book either as a gift or for your own pleasure.

I must say that as an architect who has been practicing for over 25 years, I have not read any book quite like this before that reaches so deeply into the creation of a master work such as Fallingwater. I have always "appreciated" FLW work but only recently have more fully understood what he has accomplished and created in built architectural works that to me borders on magical and genius at the same time. The glossy pictures alone only begins to reflect him as the gifted craftsman he represented. Living in Chicago I get to enjoy much of his work all the time. I'm still enjoying the book and must say your work here is amazing and a fitting tribute to an increbible individual and architect. Thanks for the experience. Jack Svaicer

Great Resource!

This is a great resource for seasoned and newbie educators alike. I'm an ELA girl by nature and choice and this brought the math standards into a clear workable focus for me. Well organized, easy to read this book also has reflections from teachers and students on each of the mathematical practices. It will not be gathering dust on my shelf as I see myself using it regularly in my planning.

Spelling Errors and Bad Pictures

I love the Wills Eye books and was really looking forward to a pediatric-specific edition, but I'm disappointed with this one. I've only skimmed the book so far and have already found multiple spelling errors and a mislabeled picture. More importantly, the pictures just aren't that great for a "color atlas." Granted, it's challenging to get a good photo on a kid, but some are old, some are too dark, and many are not the typical Wills Eye quality. Also, some of the pages dedicated to pictures have more blank space than actual content, which I don't understand.

I hate to say it, but I would wait for the next edition.
