Racing the Ice to Cape Horn, by Frank Guernsey, Cy Zoerner

Frank Guernsey lived through this tale of his record setting journey, sailing single-handed from Southern California, around Cape Horn to Uruguay, in a twenty-four foot engineless sailboat. Cy Zoerner put this harrowing adventure into words as no other author could.

As Frank revealed the story to Cy he began to wonder, as would we all, what could drive a man to commit to an outrageously dangerous undertaking in such a small craft. After endless hours discussing life and love with Frank, Cy understood and a story, like no other, poured forth.

This will be the best sailing adventure you will ever read and quite possibly the best book you will read for years to come. The greatest fiction can not match the adventures and life of Frank Guernsey.

"Humans!"

The handle of my precious watermaker stopped in my hands. My eyes strained at the black speck on the gray, watery horizon. The misery from the open saltwater sores I sat on, winked out. As I switched on my video recorder, my only companion since I set sail, I repeated, "Humans? After all these months alone..." I glanced at my watch. It was January 2, 1000 hours.

About the Author

FRANK W. GUERNSEY is a world-class solo sailor. His most recent adventure, aboard a 24-foot fiberglass sloop, took him on a 128-day nonstop voyage from Redondo Beach, California, to Punta del Este, Uruguay, via Cape Horn. In 1978, he sailed the 26-foot Boogie down the coast of Baja, California, then voyaged to Maui, Hawaii, in 1980. Five years later, he sailed his wooden sloop Amethyst to Papeete, Tahiti, in 47 days. In 1988, he again set out on Amethyst, this time to Aburatsubo, Japan, in which took 87 days. In all, Frank has voyaged 262 days (almost nine months) alone at sea in small sailboats. His exploits have been highlighted in the Japanese and South American media and in the local, regional, and national media in the United States. Born in 1942 in Los Angeles, he spent his teen years in the rebel-without-a-cause Southern California culture and in the United States Marine Corps. From Chapter 1: "Humans!"

The handle of my precious watermaker stopped in my hands. My eyes strained at the black speck on the gray, watery horizon. The misery from the open saltwater sores I sat on winked out. As I switched on my video recorder, my only companion since I set sail, I repeated, "Humans? After all these months alone..."

I glanced at my watch. It was January 2. 1000 hours.

In my excitement, the watermaker clanked onto the fiberglass cockpit floor, just missing my foot. I reached inside the cabin for binoculars. The glasses revealed hardly more than a faint dot, but across the placid, long swells, the dot had the vague shape of a boat.

"Yes!" I shouted into the desolation.

It was easy to anticipate the life aboard the oncoming ship -- a capable captain, a jolly crew, with heated cabins and the smells of hot food wafting from the galley -- spotting my small boat, coming to investigate, to see if they could give me assistance. They'd have warm, dry bunks, hot food, dry clothes, so much fresh water they could drink all they wanted, and probably even shower in it.

Their boat would cut through the water, unlike my craft, thrashing in every wave, sapping my energy just keeping my balance. I couldn't wait to see their smiling faces and waving hands, hear their surprised voices shouting. Truly an unlikely sight in these waters.

Though I wouldn't board, I'd certainly have a drink with these fellow mariners. Camaraderie here in this most enormous wilderness on earth would be sweet, human contact and all that human contact means. How I would love to hear human laughter again.

"No!"

Not after being so close in this great ocean.

Was it my eyes? Was the speck turning away?

Frantically, I keyed my tiny VHF marine radio.

"This is the sailing vessel Cestus out of Redondo Beach, California, calling the motor ship. Can you hear me?"

Only white noise. I knew my radio was working. I had talked with a lone Chilean close ashore only two days prior.

I desperately needed this vessel, because my tiny radio transmitted only line-of-sight, relatively few miles across this wilderness. I was aching to let my wife, Mary, and my family know I was still alive. Any boat except mine this far off the traditional course would carry powerful single sideband transmitters that could relay my messages back to the world.

"It's turning back. I think, it's coming this way." I was laughing, almost giddy. "Maybe he's a fisherman or maybe a naval vessel." Chilean or Argentine, probably, but it could be almost anyone.

Sighting the boat had broken my reverie. Trying to dry out from the heavy weather, I had relaxed, composing myself after stressful months of violent seas. Accustomed as it was to everlasting gales, the skin of my face felt almost numb in the calm. The agony of eroding skin, many saltwater sores, cuts, bruises, and aches -- inflicted by some of the most berserk seas on earth -- eased a bit as I basked in the pale sunlight.

It was a time of relief and recovery. I gazed into the water, seeing a stranger. The reflection revealed a gaunt face and a white beard. No doubt I had lost many pounds after months of mariner's fare. Visions of oranges, apples, bananas, lettuce, grapes, and melons tantalized me.

We rode the peaceful swells, the scions of a distant and forgotten storm. Cestus gently rose to the vast mounds that passed under, like a slow ride up a mountain, and my mind was flowing with it. Compared with yesterday, Cestus was a floating featherbed instead of a grinding concrete mixer. This was good, and a good place to be, in the sunlight, at the center of a giant, blue-gray ball, in ethereal time.

Lazily, I was thinking of the return of a sailing wind and the currents that would confront me on my future course. Ahead lay the Burdwood Bank, the Mintay Reef, and the alien Atlantic Ocean, alien at least to me, for decades a Pacific Ocean sailor. But for the moment I was at peace, pumping the watermaker, counting -- often miscounting-- each stroke between 500 and 800.

As I babbled to myself, the speck in the binoculars slowly transformed into a gray vessel of about seventy feet. It looked as if it meant business, a patrol boat or gunboat. Why was it advancing so deliberately? Was this to be an official visit?

On the one hand, I hungered for camaraderie, and I prepared for some kind of exchange. But there is also a down side to humans, and I was at the mercy of strangers. They could be coming to kill me. No one would ever know what became of me. Or was this only the paranoia of enforced solitude? "I hope this guy's not a pirate," I said to my video recorder.

The closer the boat came, the more my mouth and throat grew dry and, ironically, the more alone I felt. The stranger was armor-plated, and behind the gun slits, who knew what kind of weaponry lurked? Probably, at the least, fifty-caliber machine guns.

He might now be in radio range. "This is Cestus calling. Can you hear me?"

Not a sign of life aboard.

Involuntarily, I went on the alert. He was less than a mile away. Why wouldn't he respond? I tried again, this time in my tortured Spanish.

No reply.

"When you're alone out here, you just don't want to be approached by who you don't know. At least I don't," I said aloud, hearing a growing panic.

He circled me silently, ever tightening his arc. Was he simply curious, or was he stalking me? Why was he checking me out so carefully? My hope of contacting Mary died.

"He's not acknowledging my calls, as I sit here wondering..."

My heart pumped with the ancient rhythm of danger. In some primitive way, my perception focused with perfect clarity. No longer did I need the binoculars.

What did I have that anyone would want? My boat was a 31-year-old fiberglass sloop with water leaking into the sloshing bilge. Cestus was only an old sailboat, engineless, and worked from a long voyage in seas it was never intended to navigate. Absurd to think a pirate might want it for profit. But what about my food?

"I'm down to 38 meals," I said to the video recorder.

I had little confidence that my food would last to my intended port, Mar del Plata, Argentina. My most valuable piece of equipment was probably the PUR watermaker, which rendered sea water drinkable, but it would be ridiculous for this marauder to kill me for it.

No wind in my beard, no ripples on the water. The benevolent seas mocked me.

Removing the video camera from its mount, I taped the slow-moving, malevolent boat. I zoomed in closer. There was a good chance nobody would ever see this tape of the circling patrol boat, gunboat, pirate -- whoever -- or maybe any of the other tapes from my voyage.

I felt utterly helpless. And now it was clear that this ugly steel hulk posed another of the many obstacles in my path to safety.

"It's an uncomfortable feeling, but you have to deal with it."

Had I come this far, trying to reach an impossible dream, for nothing? My bottom lip cracked as I grinned at the irony. My iceberg enemies had been forming for millennia, waiting to crush me. Now, if I fell prey to this gunboat, they would be cheated.

Few people around the bar at the yacht club had given me much chance of survival. One said, "Frank, if you fight icebergs, the icebergs always win." At the time I had the sinking feeling she was right, even though I didn't exactly intend to "fight" the bergs. Who would ever know how far I had sailed in my quest before the end? Or was that even important now?

Yards from my boat, a large albatross paddled in the long swells. Like the Ancient Mariner, would I finally wear it around my neck? Near him were a dozen little black birds I couldn't identify. In this relative warmth, perhaps the sea birds congregated to mate. Maybe life and death floating along together.

"This is the sailing vessel Cestus..."

He remained mute. Like the Mary Celeste, the gunboat seemed abandoned. No waving hands. No smiling faces. But there was some intelligence guiding that helm. Was it evil?

The gun slits looked like dark slashes, but I couldn't see the guns. It was still possible he was a government patrol boat, but which government? I could see no flags, nor any other identification. One thing was sure: This was no fishing or commercial boat.

I began to sweat, almost unthinkable at 56 degrees south latitude. I smelled of wet wool. The skies were serenely clear and the temperature was about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a typical day in my California home, but extremely rare this close to the South Pole and the "red line" of icebergs. By nightfall, I knew, the cold would return to pierce me. With luck.

The peaceful water slapped my calmly rocking craft. As the intruder circled closer, I heard the faint drone of diesels.

"I don't want any trouble," I said aloud, my voice imploring.

The closer he approached, the more terrifying he appeared. Was it possible his dark hull, white superstructure, businesslike gun slits and bristling antennae array added up to my last voyage?

The acrid diesel smoke was like an assault across the water. A confrontation was inevitable. Now there seemed only one course of action.

By nature, I am gentle. The last thing on my mind was killing, even in self-defense, but I wasn't going down without a struggle. I had a 12-gauge shotgun aboard, and a friend had provided ammunition before I sailed from King Harbor.

Maybe an old Cold War strategy would work. I'd show the shotgun and hope it would give him proper notice, provide a deterrent. Of course, it might provoke an attack. It was something like a match between an air rifle and a cannon. In any case, having the gun handy would provide a comfort.

He could blow me out of the water at will, or run me down. Up close, I might blast his hull, but would my 2 3/4-inch slugs, selected by a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff, penetrate the steel below the waterline?

Almost two hours had passed since he started stalking me. It was time for action. I couldn't run because of the calm, and there was no place to hide in this rolling isolation. I must be ready. Ridiculously outgunned, I must face whatever was in store. I reached below. The weapon felt cold in my bruised hands.

Inhaling his diesel fumes, I could almost hear the hammering gunfire as it shattered the Antarctic silence. I could feel myself sinking beneath the paralyzing, cold water, caught in the same current as my enemy icebergs.

Clack-clack. I injected a slug into my shotgun.

Amazing Adventure
By JEFFREY C ZOERNER
Frank Gurnsey undertook an adventure that compares favorably to the conquest of Everest. No one could possibly fathom what this ordeal was like unless he read this book. It is fascinating, and it would even be inspiring, except that most of us aren't as crazed as old Mr. Gurnsey.
This book could only have been written by an excellent writer and someone who had a deep understanding of and appreciation for sailing. Co-author Zoerner qualifies on both accounts. His understanding of the subject and his treatment of it are great. The book hooks you after a few pages, and you never feel like putting it down thereafter.
I've met Mr. Gurnsey a few times, but I feel I only truly understand him after reading this book. I'm not much of a sailing aficianado, and I loved it. A fine job by both men.

Wonderful Book
By Ryan
A very thoughtful book about the creative process. I very much enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. I found the book to be insight on the idea that becoming a great artist, or great at anything for that matter, is a lonely process. But you must push through and trust yourself.

Very thought-provoking, thoroughly enjoyed
By Leisa Miller
I finished this book in about an hour. It flowed really well and was enjoyable and thought-provoking overall. There were several times that I ended up pausing to think about what was written, and I even took some notes. Here are some of those thought-provoking quotes from the book:

"The physical act of creation is what creates value. Ideas do not."

"If the goal is to catch 100 fish, do the simplest thing to catch 100 fish."

Mr. Knapp also talks about creating an "artisan business" which was novel to me. There's a difference between a hobby and artisan business, he says. An artisan business is all-encompassing. It's about your life's work. A hobby isn't as serious. I really loved thinking about this.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book. I got quite a bit out of it as a soul-searching, what-do-I-do-with-my-life 20 something. Would recommend.

Quick and easy read with some great points
By Tiana McKinney
This was a worthwhile read that made some interesting points to consider. I bookmarked several pages that I thought had especially good thoughts on the creative process. I didn't fully agree with everything the author wrote and I also noticed a few places that could use more editing (including what was either a typo or a grammar error). Overall, I really enjoyed the read and I will most likely come back to it for reference in the future.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

The field of the sociology of religion remains rich and bountiful. Fortunately the quality of researchers is higher than ever, with many bright and well-trained young social scientists joining the ranks eager to make contributions to their chosen field. It is exciting and invigorating to be part of this surge of interest and effort.

As we observe both the many developments and events within societies that have religion as a core ingredient, and as we read the increasing amount of solid research and theorizing in the sociology of religion, it is clear that this seventh edition has a deep reservoir to plumb. Accordingly we have added a significant amount of new material as well as expanded the treatment of subjects that had already been introduced in earlier editions (and we dropped a few pages also). We present a summary below.

  • Included rational choice theory as a major contribution to understanding religion's role and function in society, particularly as rational choice theory deals with the secularization hypothesis, but also as rational choice theory clarifies our understanding of several other substantive issues.
  • Expanded the discussion of cults outside Western societies: one in Uganda (Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God), one in China (The Falun Gong), and one in Afghanistan (Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda).
  • Brings readers up to date on the continuing internal conflicts in the Southern Baptist Convention and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
  • Included a new discussion of interreligious conflict in Asia: Hindu-Muslim, Muslim-Christian, Hindu-Christian, and Hindu-Muslim-Sikh.
  • Updated U.S. Supreme Court cases through 2002 and added discussion of church-state cases reaching the courts concerning public school prayer, school vouchers for religious schools, and the removal of the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • Added a substantial new section on the Third World Islamist Movement as a politico-religious movement, including recent history, the concept of Jihad, and the emergence of al Qaeda, also noting relevant theology and parallels in the Christian tradition.
  • Expanded the section on Islamic Fundamentalism in several manifestations as well as its relationship to terrorism originating in the Middle East.
  • Included 2000 U.S. Census data on growth in the ranks of female clergy, discussed the ordination of the first female Orthodox Jewish rabbi, expanded and updated discussion of enrollment of women at both Protestant and Catholic theological schools, and applied rational choice theory to my predictions about additional denominations deciding to ordain women.
  • Described some recent movement within the black church away from the sect end of the church-sect continuum and made two applications of rational choice theory to African American religion.
  • Added a major new section on non-Western religions to the discussion of denominationalism in the United States—Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism—with an emphasis on changed patterns of immigration from Asia.
  • Provided current data (2000) showing dramatic differences in membership gains and losses among "higher tension" and "lower tension" religious groups.
  • Included a substantial discussion of challenges to Catholic teachings and authority by laypersons, with emphasis on the disenchantment of many with respect to papal pronouncements on birth control and the American priestly pedophilia scandal.
  • Retained the concept of secularization as differentiation and incorporated an application of rational choice theory to that concept and also included an important modification and clarification of secularization theory by Mark Chaves.
  • Updated the discussion of ecumenism and described the death and rebirth of the Consultation on Church Union (COCU) in 2001.
  • The number, structure, and sequence of chapters have remained the same as in the sixth edition. Part I (Chapters 14) is an introduction to the sociological perspective on religion. It grapples with the problem of defining religion, considers the fascinating but ultimately unanswerable question of the origins of religion, and focuses on sociology's distinctive perspective on religion as a social phenomenon. Part II (Chapters 5-6) looks closely at the classic churchsect continuum of religious organization and evolution and considers how conflict figures so commonly in the life of religious organizations. Part III (Chapters 7-11) examines the relationship of religion to major social institutions and structural features of society; religion and politics; religious fundamentalism; religion and the economy; religion and social class; and, finally, religion and the role and perception of women in society. Part IV (Chapters 12-15) covers some of the major features of religion in the United States-the social environment and experience of a majority of the readers of this text. After exploring several highly important sociohistorical developments within American religion, the chapters in Part IV pay particular attention to American socioreligious developments, namely, the African American church, Native American religion, and the phenomenon of denominationalism. Part IV concludes by focusing on primary sociological factors that will significantly affect the future of religion.

This edition retains the book's focus on grounding the sociological study of religion in basic sociological concepts, structures, and theory that demonstrate religion's status as a major social institution that is in constant social interaction and reciprocation with other institutions. As such, religion adapts and evolves in response to challenges and changes within the society in which it operates. Throughout it all religion provides a wide range of choices as people look for answers, encouragement, comfort, and hope.

I want to express sincere appreciation to my brother, Doug, for important and timely information; to Edie Riker, production editor, for answering all my questions and giving good and timely advice throughout the process; and to my wife, Arline, for her steadfastness in tolerating my single-mindedness in putting together yet another edition.

Incredible depth, a true treasure for economic students
    By Robert Kirk
Seriously this is one of the best books I've read in years. A great historical account of the field of economics. After finishing this book, I have a much better appreciation for economic history and it's main intellectual contributors. The suggestions for further reading after each chapter is complete gold and I plan on tackling many of those books. As I reading through the book, I become simply amazed at the depth of the writer's knowledge. In summary, if you are hard core fan of economics I believe you will simply love and cherish this book.

    Good synopsis but poor analysis
    By Jorge Fernandez Baca
I have always felt uneasy with this book since I was an under graduated student, 30 years ago. This is undoubtedly a quiet useful book for anyone who needs a bird's-eye view of the classics in economics. If you don't have time to read Smith's Wealth of Nations or Marshall's Principles, here you have the book you need. However, it is not here that you can look for a good analysis of the meaning and implications of the main schools of economic thought, as well as the relevance of the work of its most distinguished authors and their social and intellectual environment. That is reason why I always preferred Schumpeter's History of Economic Analysis. Today, that I am lecturing this course my dissatisfaction has increased, among other reasons because you have more and better textbooks, such as Lionel Robbins' History of Economic Thought, Mark Skoussen's Making of Modern Economics, or Jürg Niehams' History of Economic Theory, which I really enjoyed reading because they try to make a portrayal of the intellectual and human stature of the most important economists of all times and their background.

Full Body Burden: Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats, by Kristen Iversen

Full Body Burden is Kristen Iversen's story of growing up in a small Colorado town close to Rocky Flats, a secret nuclear weapons plant. It's also a book about the destructive power of secrets—both family secrets and government secrets. Her father's hidden liquor bottles, the strange cancers in children in the neighborhood, the truth about what they made at Rocky Flats—best not to inquire too deeply into any of it. But as Iversen grew older, she began to ask questions and discovered some disturbing realities.
As this memoir unfolds, it reveals itself as a brilliant work of investigative journalism—a shocking account of the government's sustained attempt to conceal the effects of the toxic and radioactive waste released by Rocky Flats, and of local residents' vain attempts to seek justice in court. Based on extensive interviews, FBI and EPA documents, and class-action testimony, this taut, beautifully written book promises to have a very long half-life.

    Amazon.com Review
    A Q&A with the Author
Why did you write the book?
Rocky Flats was the big secret of my childhood. No one knew what they did at the plant; the rumor in the neighborhood was that they made household cleaning products. We knew nothing about radioactive and toxic contamination. My childhood was also shadowed by the secrecy surrounding my father’s alcoholism. My family was very close and loving but also troubled. I wrote the book to learn what really happened at Rocky Flats, to learn everything I could about plutonium pits and nuclear weapons and the crucial role the plant played during and after the Cold War. I also wanted to understand my family and the broader context of what it meant to grow up during the seventies. Secrecy at the level of the community and at the level of family turned out to be a central theme in the book.

One of the great ironies of my life is that I spent several years as a travel writer in Europe, looking for good stories to write about, and the biggest story turned out to be—quite literally—in my own backyard. My family and our neighbors were “Cold War warriors,” as the plutonium workers themselves were called, but no one told us.

How is Rocky Flats a global issue?
The 2011 accident at Fukushima, following the tsunami, reminded the world in a terrible way that we cannot ignore the threat of radioactive contamination, whether it comes from nuclear power plants or nuclear weapons sites. The world has experienced many nuclear disasters in recent years, including accidents at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, the Mayak facility in Russia (the “sister” plant to Rocky Flats), Rocky Flats in Colorado, and other former nuclear weapons sites around the United States such as Hanford and Fernald. The health effects of short-term, high-level radioactive contamination are fairly well known. What are the health costs of long-term, low-level radioactive exposure? Scientists and physicists continue to debate the topic, but one fact is for sure: there is no safe level of exposure to plutonium. One millionth of a gram, particularly if it is inhaled, can cause cancer.

Rocky Flats happened in my backyard, but in a sense it is happening in everyone’s back yard. Many of us live in close proximity to former nuclear weapons sites or nuclear power plants with inadequate safety provisions. And, at a time when we are supposed to be decreasing our nuclear arsenal, the U.S. government is talking about producing nuclear triggers again. We need to pay attention.

Was it hard to write so intimately about your family?
I believe that the most powerful way to tell a story is through personal, everyday experience. Every person on the planet has a story that is both ordinary and extraordinary. My siblings and I swam in the lake behind our house and rode our horses in the fields. We had, in many ways, a blessed childhood. And this kind of experience is one that many readers will share. What makes our story unique is that it connects, in ways that we never anticipated, to a broader historical and political narrative. The story of the 1969 fire at Rocky Flats—which very nearly destroyed the entire metro Denver area—is all the more powerful when you realize that my family was having a very pleasant Mother’s Day brunch at a nearby restaurant. We had no idea what was going on—and neither did other Coloradoans. It was only by including the experiences of me, my family, my neighbors, and my coworkers at Rocky Flats that I could truly bring the story to life. It was indeed a challenge to write intimately about things that, as a family, we were never supposed to discuss, including my father’s drinking. And yet the end result was a tremendous sense of clarity and understanding.

What surprised you most during your research for the book?
I was surprised, and continue to be surprised, by the secrecy surrounding this very dramatic story. What happened at Rocky Flats, during the Cold War and up to the present moment, is crucially important not only to Colorado but to the entire country. But so much of the story has been hidden over the years, and now it is in danger of being forgotten. Recently I stayed at a hotel just a few miles from the Rocky Flats site, and the young man at the front desk had grown up in Colorado. He’d never heard of Rocky Flats. Of those people who do know the story--or part of it--many believe that Rocky Flats is old history, that it’s irrelevant and insignificant. They believe the land is safe and the story is over. After all, you can’t see or smell plutonium.

Yet we cannot forget the story of Rocky Flats. The effects will linger far into the future. There were many other surprises too. During my research, I was shocked to discover how many tons of MUF, or “Missing Unaccounted For” plutonium, was missing, even to the present day. And the history of the 1989 FBI raid on Rocky Flats is fascinating. I believe it’s the only time in the history of the United States that two government agencies--the FBI and the EPA--have raided another agency, the Department of Energy.

"Full Body Burden is one of the most important stories of the nuclear era--as personal and powerful as "Silkwood," told with the suspense and narrative drive of The Hot Zone. With unflinching honesty, Kristen Iverson has written an intimate and deeply human memoir that shows why we should all be concerned about nuclear safety, and the dangers of ignoring science in the name of national security. Rocky Flats needs to be part of the same nuclear discussion as Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima. So does Full Body Burden. It's an essential and unforgettable book that should be talked about in schools and book clubs, online and in the White House."
—Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

"What a surprise! You don't expect such (unobtrusively) beautiful writing in a book about nuclear weapons, nor such captivating storytelling. Plus the facts are solid and the science told in colloquial but never dumbed-down terms. If I could afford them, I'd want the movie rights. Having read scores of nuclear books, I venture a large claim: Kristin Iversen's Full Body Burden may be a classic of nuclear literature, filling a gap we didn't know existed among Hersey's Hiroshima, Burdick and Wheeler's Fail-Safe and Kohn's Who Killed Karen Silkwood?"
—Mark Hertsgaard, author of Nuclear Inc. and HOT

"This terrifyingly brilliant book--as perfectly crafted and meticulously assembled as the nuclear bomb triggers that lie at its core--is a savage indictment of the American strategic weapons industry, both haunting in its power, and yet wonderfully, charmingly human as a memoir of growing up in the Atomic Age."
—Simon Winchester, author of The Professor and the Madman and Atlantic

"Why didn't Poe or Hitchcock think of this? Full Body Burden has all the elements of a classic horror tale: the charming nuclear family cruising innocently above the undercurrents of nuclear nightmare. But it's true and all the more chilling. Kristen Iversen has lived this life and is an authority on the culture of secrecy that has prevented the nation from knowing the truth about radioactive contamination. This is a gripping and scary story."
—Bobbie Ann Mason, author of Shiloh and Other Stories and In Country

"Kristen Iversen has written a hauntingly beautiful memoir that is also a devastating investigation into the human costs of building and living with the atomic bomb. Poignant and gracefully written, Iversen shows us what it meant to come of age next door to Rocky Flats--America’s plutonium bomb factory. The story is at once terrifying and outrageous."
—Kai Bird, co-author of American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer

"The fight over Rocky Flats was and is a paradigmatic American battle, of corporate and government power set against the bravery and anger of normal people. This is a powerful and beautiful account, of great use to all of us who will fight the battles that lie ahead."
—Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and Eaarth

"Part memoir, part investigative journalism, Full Body Burden is a tale that will haunt your dreams. It's a story of secrecy, deceit, and betrayal set in the majestic high plains of Colorado. Kristen Iversen takes us behind her family's closed doors and beyond the security fences and the armed guards at Rocky Flats. She's as honest and restrained in her portrait of a family in crisis as she is in documenting the incomprehensible betrayal of citizens by their government, in exposing the harrowing disregard for public safety exhibited by the technocrats in charge of a top-secret nuclear weapons facility. For decades the question asked by residents living downwind of the plant was 'Would my government deliberately put my life and the lives of my children in danger?' The simple and irrefutable answer was 'Yes, it would . . . in a Colorado minute.'"
—John Dufresne, author of Louisiana Power & Light and Love Warps the Mind a Little

“This is a subject as grippingly immediate as today's headlines: While there is alarm about the small rise in radioactivity in the food chain, one reads in these pages about how a whole region lived in the steady contaminating effects of nuclear radiation. Kristen Iversen's prose is clean and clear and lovely, and her story is deeply involving and full of insight and knowledge; it begins in innocence, and moves through catastrophes; it is unflinching and brave, an expose about ignorance and denial and the cost of government excess, and an intensely personal portrait of a family. It ought to be required reading for every single legislator in this country.”
—Richard Bausch, author of Peace and Something Is Out There

    The burden of silence
    By saltwise
Full Body Burden could have been named conspiracy of silence it that had not already been used.

Kristen Iversen follows silence throughout this very important book: the silence within a fractured family; the silence of the wind-swept high plains reaching toward the Colorado rocky mountains; and the worst silence of all, that knowing silence putting hundreds of thousands of lives at risk as our own government lied to further its own ends.

As a historian this book shames me. Nearly forty years after the Mississippi summer it dawned on me I could have joined in that effort. I was 18. I knew about it. It didn't make the connection. Not so many years after that, living about 20 miles south of Rocky Flats, I knew but didn't make the effort to understand what was happening. And this book shames me.

For the most part the local news media was silent, as were our elected leaders. Only too few "kooks" recognized some of the dangers. However, they thought it building nuclear weapons was immoral and wrong. Not until the FBI raid and the heroic and still silenced grand jury, did we all learn of the real danger--the vast careless contamination of the air, water and soil affecting so very many.

Silence is the true enemy of this country.

Reading Full Body Burden is one way to break the silence. It is a very strong addition to the history of the cold war and the nuclear industry in this country.

Epic sprawl, personal touch, and important civic knowledge
    By Nathan Webster
Author Kristen Iversen's 12 years of research is evident in this fairly epic look at the Rocky Flats nuclear weapon's factory, and the contamination, cancer and dishonesty the facility left behind. But, this is the price for a nation's protective nuclear arsenal - the weapons have to be built somewhere, and Rocky Flats was the source for the nuclear warhead's plutonium 'triggers.'

The 'villain' of the piece is of course the government and the private companies - Dow Chemical, for example - that willfully kept secrets from the close-by Denver population, pretending the facility was much safer than it was, and that the health effects were minimal. A grand jury's recommended criminal indictment was ignored, and at the book's conclusion, an appeals court overturns a mammoth legal judgement in resident's favor.

None of this is really a surprise. But it's depressing to see how local communities are ignored - or worse, how decent jobs are considered more important than long-term health. Thousands of perfectly content workers are at the plant; had they up and quit one day in protest, maybe they could have changed things. But that never happens; in fact, Iversen shows several cases where whistle-blowers were threatened by their fellow workers, scared the plant would close and take away their jobs. So it's easy to blame the companies and the government, but we're the ones who sit idly by.

This part of the story should anger and disgust readers, but we should not be surprised that a nuclear program designed to try and protect the entire country would have been unwilling to sacrifice the health of a few towns.

The book's parallel thread is Iversen's childhood in the community, and dealing with an alcoholic father. Her personal memoir does not connect that closely with her nuclear narrative, but it's an interesting look at the real lives going on in the "shadow" of the nuclear facility.

I liked how she kept going back and forth between her research and her memoir. It kept the story from falling too much into impersonal reportage - but also from being too personal, without a larger story. She shifts between these "big" and "small" aspects very often, usually every few pages. I liked the book's quick pace.

For me, her personal story wasn't quite as meaningful, especially stacked against the epic sprawl of legal cases, revelations and citizen-led protests. Her memoir was necessary for this to be a compelling "human" story, but I was much more interested in her reportage than her life. Her decade-plus of research is very clear on the page, and this book's earned its credibility. It has an anti-nuclear agenda, but facts are facts, and her narrative raises important questions.

I read a lot of books about Iraq, where I embedded as a journalist a few times. I believe that citizens should read books about Iraq not even just to enjoy them, but to see what they helped fund and support - that was a trillion dollars and then some that we spent there, and people should know where that money went.

I feel the same way about this book. The missiles and weapons that "protected" us during the Cold War did not come for free. People had to build them, using the most poisonous materials on Earth. We might look at Japan and Chernobyl and say, "oh, good thing it didn't happen here." But - events DID happen, just not as dramatic as a meltdown.

So readers owe it to themselves to seek out a book like this, and read about choices and compromises that are required to live in a free society. These are the choices the government made, but it certainly didn't put the decision up to an open vote with all the facts on the table. "Full Body Burden" gives a look behind that curtain, and it isn't very pretty. People will give up a lot for a steady paycheck; maybe too much.

Deserves to be a best seller!
    By Trudie Barreras
There is absolutely no way to do this book justice in a brief review. It accomplishes what would seem to be impossibility - combining an intimate and elegant personal memoir with a powerful and incredibly important documentary.

Although I was not brought up in the near vicinity of Rocky Flats, my own childhood was indeed overshadowed in more ways than one by "The Bomb". I was a six-year-old living in Gallup, NM, at the time of the Trinity Test. My mother was pregnant with my younger sister at the time. The pre-dawn concussion of that blast woke her out of a sound sleep, and she always swore that it was the first time she felt the baby kick. The commandant of Ft. Wingate Ordinance Depot where my father worked as a civilian employee was panicked because he thought the explosion must have occurred on-site in some of their munitions bunkers. I remember the ongoing nightmares of a child with the threat of nuclear weapons being discussed on the radio (we didn't have a TV). Of course, with Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque where my parents lived after the war, and Los Alamos only 70 miles or so to the north, we always knew we'd be in one of the primary target areas in case of attack.

But - and this is the crucial point made so brilliantly in Iversen's magnificent narrative - there was no inkling of the incredible cover-up of the dangers of simply BUILDING the bombs that were meant to provide our deterrent capability. Although I lived in New Mexico and Arizona during a good part of the time so carefully described in this story, I had no clue about anything of significance occurring at Rocky Flats. Even the massive demonstrations in 1978 seem to have completely escaped my notice, although I was tuned in to many of the other politically significant events in that time-frame.

A number of years ago I read a book about the Hanford site and was completely appalled by the stupidity, negligence, and deceptiveness that occurred there. Obviously, though, Rocky Flats is in the same category, perhaps even more deplorable. While Iversen notes the two "worst" nuclear disasters to date are the Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi power plant accidents, she cites the "third worst" as the explosion of an underground storage tank for nuclear waste in Khyshtym, near the Kayak plant in Russia. She points out that in all these instances, there has been "the same troubling pattern of government silence and misinformation." I would comment that clearly a major threat has always been and will continue to be failure to deal with proper containment of nuclear waste, and even when plants are closed down this issue remains!

It is my profound belief that we as citizens need to know the truth about the real risks resulting from our burgeoning nuclear industry both for peaceful and for wartime uses. Only then can intelligent political decisions be made. For her contributions to the dialog, Kristen Iversen not only deserves a medal of honor, but also to have her book become a runaway best seller!

I have just heard a magnificent interview with the author on the Public Radio program "Fresh Air", broadcsst on my local public radio station, WABE, in Atlanta, Georgia on June 12. Kristen Iversen interviews as well as she writes, and as I said above, this book deserves to be a best seller and Iversen deserves all the recognition she can possibly receive for her work.
