Great Textbook!

The illustrations and pictures are in color, which makes it much more convenient for my students to understand them. Especially for the more complicated topics like directional terms and identifying microorganisms. Fabulous book and a good alternative to the TVA book (an oldie, but still a goodie!).

The early pioneers in electronics were intrigued by the mystery and wonder of a newly discovered science, whereas people today are attracted by its ability to lend its hand to any application and accomplish almost anything imaginable. It is with a good deal of pleasure that I present to the member of the Class of 1913 the Sexennial Report. It has been a long story, the work having been started in August. I cannot help but call attention to the fact that it is not due to lack of effort on the part of the Secretary's organization that the Report was not gotten out before, but it has been due to many members of the Class not forwarding their "Lives" promptly.
The Committee which was appointed at the Sexennial Reunion consisting of Hollister, Roosevelt, Meyer, Evarts and Ford, have been of great assistance in getting out the Report.
We have taken the liberty of spending a little more of the Class money than on previous reports in order that this one, coming as it does shortly after the War, may be a book of more permanent record and use to each and every member of the Class.

Fun story. The weight and personality change has a well done flow, quite natural. How Marcy's change affects everything around her is interesting to follow, and seeing how others react to it, can a new Italian attitude be too much for a real Italian? Read and see.

Disaster.

This is the worst book on programming I've ever read. There are no explanation of the concept at all, just examples. Code is messy. Text often misses the whole chunks of crucial code. Project samples that you can download with the book, on the other hand, sometimes differ from the code in the book. It's a mess! Basically, it's not even a book, it's a bunch of tutorials on ReactiveCocoa 4, you can easily find a bunch of those for free.

Mohandas Gandhi, one of the world's greatest figures has already become legend. In this book Jeanette Eaton shows him as a human being. The author wanted to show you that Gandhi did not grow up in a poor neighborhood, in fact his family was quite well off financially speaking, but Gandhi still changed his life style to that of simplicity and poverty so that he would be able to help those who could choose to live like this. This book was well detailed and went through all of things that you should know about Gandhi and his life. I did not know the amount of good services and deeds that he did until i read this book by Jeanette Eaton. For being the first thing about Gandhi that i have read i found it very educational, and well worth reading.

About the Author
Alex "Sandy" Pentland directs MIT’s Human Dynamics Laboratory and the MIT Media Lab Entrepreneurship Program and co-leads the World Economic Forum Big Data and Personal Data initiatives. good idea poor execution

The ideas behind this book seem good, but the author does not provide much hard evidence to back them up. Most evidence comes in the form of pointing out what esteemed journal published the data. The small area where I am knowledgeable contained inaccurate information. The book seems to be a paean to his isolated genius, and an advertisement for his many companies. I would have liked to see more use of the group wisdom that the book celebrates, and more real data.

a paradox

This very well written book contains great ideas that not only are interesting in theory, but very promising if applied to society, as the experiments the author and his team seem to demonstrate. However, this book has a huge problem: it reduces a big picture to the authors particular research, not giving credit nor connecting with multiple different approaches to the same problems. A naïve reader will get the impression that the author and his team are the pioneers or, at minimal, the leading researchers, of several fields such as cultural analytics, memetics, ideas spread, social networks, open data legislation, mathematics of cooperation and collective intelligence.

As another commentator put it, the book feels like an academic resumé, and I'd add it also feels like a brochure for the companies the author has found (along with his students). This academic nepotism is bluntly paradoxical, being a book about cooperation, ideas flow, social intelligence and the importance of diversity and exploration of external ideas.

It feels sad to give 3 stars to a book that has great contents, but it would be very easy for the author to have expanded the already interesting ideas, connecting them with the work of many other great thinkers and well stablished approaches; the book would gain so much.

The crusades have inspired both the very long (Steven Runciman's classic three-volume history) and, now, the very short, exposition. Paine, author of Ancient Greece, does an admirable job in condensing this riveting and often confusing history into just over 130 pages, offering much more than the book's slim stature might suggest: the macabre end of Frederick of Barbarossa, whose army dutifully carried his pickled corpse into the holy land; and the Children's Crusade, whose young participants could not survive the treachery of their older Christian brethren (many died or were sold into slavery) before having a chance to fight the wicked Saracen. This short account lacks the nuance with which many scholars have treated the subject; readers will find very little on the manifold causes and the controversies of these holy wars or of their nachleben, the elaborate mythology and works of art and propaganda they continue to inspire. (Paine does mention President Bush's use of "crusade" in a "war on terror" speech.) The book is hurt by its lack of clear maps and illustrations and by its occasional lapse into a glib or colloquial style. (Referring to the Templars as "cocky" seems anachronistic.) That said, this is a perfectly readable and brisk introduction that should stimulate readers new to the subject. 1 map.

About the Author
Malcolm Longair is Emeritus Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy and Director of Development at the Cavendish Laboratory. He was appointed the ninth Astronomer Royal of Scotland in 1980, as well as the Regius Professor of Astronomy, University of Edinburgh, and the director of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. He was head of the Cavendish Laboratory from 1997 to 2005 and he has served on and chaired many international committees, boards and panels, working with both NASA and the European Space Agency. He has received much recognition for his work over the years, including a CBE in the millennium honours list for his services to astronomy and cosmology.
