Great Resource!

This is a great resource for seasoned and newbie educators alike. I'm an ELA girl by nature and choice and this brought the math standards into a clear workable focus for me. Well organized, easy to read this book also has reflections from teachers and students on each of the mathematical practices. It will not be gathering dust on my shelf as I see myself using it regularly in my planning.

Spelling Errors and Bad Pictures

I love the Wills Eye books and was really looking forward to a pediatric-specific edition, but I'm disappointed with this one. I've only skimmed the book so far and have already found multiple spelling errors and a mislabeled picture. More importantly, the pictures just aren't that great for a "color atlas." Granted, it's challenging to get a good photo on a kid, but some are old, some are too dark, and many are not the typical Wills Eye quality. Also, some of the pages dedicated to pictures have more blank space than actual content, which I don't understand.

I hate to say it, but I would wait for the next edition.

If you served in Vietnam, read this book

This is one of a handful of books about the Vietnam War that should be read by everyone. It ranks with Bernard Fall's "Street Without Joy" as a must read. In fact "Street Without Joy" set the moral template for many thoughtful college educated Americans. That is, it presented the struggle as a struggle against colonialism. Even racism. The Communists represented the Asian populations being shoved around by the bullying white race. That analysis basically remained in place for a quarter of a century, until the Communists finally rolled into Saigon on Russian and Chinese trucks and put a period in over a century of European and American racism. When Bill Ayers says that he wishes that "he could have done more" he is probably speaking for millions of Americans who saw the struggle in ethnic terms.

This book is a powerful and important counterweight to that template. Many Americans are justifiably ready to accept the fact that some of the Communists were noble men fighting a battle that they believed that they had to win. This book presents men who were just as noble fighting for a cause that they believed they should win. Certainly by 1970 the racial issue was settled. White people were willing to concede that the people running Vietnam should be Vietnamese. The men presented in this book should have prevailed,. Bill Ayers people should have lost. A rare source

There are intriguing anecdotes on Bokassa's lost daughter, the prospect of offshore oil production, and the glimpses into varied aspects of the running of a nation. The brief existence of the Second Republic was beset with destructive war yet the gains of are clear as a generation of administrators drew on their expertise help the nation thrive amidst the ravages of violent attacks and international politics.

This is the Munchkin edition of Gloom, *not* the Gloom edition of Munchkin

The Gripe: Marketing is very deceptive. 1 of 5 stars.
Things to note: 1) this game comes in a box the same size and shape as previous Munchkin titles, and 2) follows the same name pattern as their previous licensed offering (see Munchkin Pathfinder Card Game). 3) In the past, all the varied and assorted editions of Gloom have come in a small box approximately the same size and shape as the base set (see Fairytale GLOOM Card Game _ with Bonus Gold cloth drawstring storage bag _ bundle for example). 4) Other games that have been rethemed ala Munchkin have been packaged in a manner that emulates the original game (see Munchkin Loot Letter Clamshell Edition Game)

So, if you see this game on the shelf, it is a very reasonable assumption that it will be a Gloom-themed Munchkin game. And if, like me, you were specifically already planning to buy Gloom at Gen Con 2015, you just might have dropped $25 for the original Gloom, and another $30 on a game you thought was Munchkin, expecting to have two different games when you got home. Like me, you would be proven wrong as you unbox your new pretties at the gaming table with your friends.

To be fair, if you actually read the box it does say "A Game by Keith Baker based on Munchkin by Steve Jackson Games" on the front, and the back of the box is fairly obviously talking about Gloom. But, when you're holding a box in your hand that looks and feels like it should be Munchkin, really, when was the last time you had to question that?

If I had realized I was about to purchase two variations of the same game, I probably would have picked one or the other, but not both.

The Game, though? 5 of 5 stars.
I'm not going to rate the game poorly just because I feel like I was tricked into buying it. Gloom is great game, and this is a fantastic take on it. The original game has very Edward Gorey style art work and macabre ways of making your little family miserable. Kovalic's artwork in the Munchkin version is very true to classic Munchkin/Dork Towers, the puns are spot on, and it continues to break the 4th wall with casual irreverence (one of the Untimely Death cards is refers to Crossing the GM.)

So, I know my math is crappy and if this were a real average my overall rating would be a 3, but I don't honestly think the game warrants a "Meh" review. Mostly I just want buyers to know what game they are buying.

OMG! best version ever. We have all the gloom games/expansions and all the munchkin base game and expansions and looooove them both so the marriage of these two games is BRILLIANT. If you are a lover of either of the games or both this is a MUST HAVE!!! Hilarious on a whole new level because it spoofs RPG (duh, it's munchkin) AND makes you kill off your characters in horrific ways (the best PART of a good RPG... if you are going to go out, go out with a bang) Gamers will adore this!

About the Author
Jebediah Pavleas is a graduate student in the Computer Science and Software Engineering program at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB). He received a Bachelor of Science in 2012 and was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal for his class. During his time as an undergraduate he took a great interest in both computer graphics and games. His projects included an interactive math application that utilizes Microsoft’s Kinect sensor to teach algebra, a 2D role-playing game designed to teach students introductory programming concepts, and a website where students can compete in various mini-games to control checkpoints around campus. Relating to these projects, he coauthored publications in IEEE Computers and The Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSC). When not working towards his graduate degree, he enjoys designing, building, and playing games of all kinds as well as adapting technology for improved accessibility. A university student in computer science, he is interested in working as a game programmer, focusing on accessibility.

Exceptionally insightful - a must read for anyone with children in their lives!

I love Catherine McTamaney's writing. She is observant and reflective and really makes you think as much with your heart as with your mind. I love to read it slowly, one essay every day or two, and then I enjoy letting her insights percolate for a bit before moving on to the next one. This, as well as her earlier book, The Tao of Montessori, is a must read for anyone with children in their lives. Profound questions and truths that apply far beyond teaching and far beyond Montessori are waiting inside the covers.

The shortest and least BULLS*** book I read this year. 67 pages of non-stop sense. It's hard to find these days.

The essence of bullshit is not that it is FALSE but that it is PHONY.

Someone who lies and someone who tells the truth are playing on opposite sides, so to speak, in the same game. Each responds to the facts as he understand them, although the response of the one is guided by the authority of truth, while the response of the other defies that authority and refuses to meet its demands. The bulls***ter ignores these demands altogether. He does not reject the authority of the truth, as the liar does, and opposes himself to it at all. He pays no attention to it at all. By virtue of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.

Frankfurt starts strong: "One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much BS. Laugh aloud in the beginning but wait for it. Then he goes about defining a theoretical understanding of BS. Really? S#IT is a powerful word but BS is less insulting than a LIE. The source might be cheerful ignorance but to lie you need to know the truth. Can we know the TRUTH? Here comes a punch: "Our nature is elusively insubstantial… sincerity itself is BS". I’m crying here :-)

Difficult to Follow

Frankfurt took a very interesting, seemingly simple topic, and proceeded to conflate it into a rather confusing, esoteric academic explanation. I chose to read this essay for pleasure, as it was referenced in a political news article about bulls***ter supreme Donald Trump. I suppose, though, that to a more academic audience this would be an appropriate and useful essay.

About the Author
Richard Bullock (Ph.D., University of Virginia) is emeritus professor of English at Wright State University, where he directed the writing programs for twenty-eight years and designed the university's writing across the curriculum program and Introduction to College Writing Workshop. In 2012, he was awarded the Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence, Wright State's highest honor. In addition to The Norton Field Guide to Writing, he is a coauthor of The Little Seagull Handbook.

Michal Brody is a linguist, independent scholar, and lecturer. She was a founding faculty member of the Universidad de Oriente in Yucatán, Mexico, and teaches now at Sonoma State University and San Francisco State University. Her scholarly work centers on language pedagogy and politics in the United States and Mexico. She’s the author (with Keith Walters) of What’s Language Got to Do with It? and coauthor (with Richard Bullock and Francine Weinberg) of The Little Seagull Handbook, and the editor of the Everyone’s an Author Tumblr site and They Say / I Blog.

Francine Weinberg (M.Ed, Teachers College, Columbia University) is an author and editor who has worked for more than thirty years on college and high school English textbooks. She is the author of the handbook in The Norton Field Guide to Writing and a coauthor of The Little Seagull Handbook.
