About the Author
Aircraft was Roger Williams' first love, and he joined the de Havilland Aircraft Company where he quickly added motorcars to his list of prime interests. During the ensuing six years he not only completed his apprenticeship and studies, but also built two Ford-based specials. and in 1986 he started his own consultancy business, which allowed him to restore numerous MGBs, a Triumph TR6 and a Triumph Stag, and to write several MGB and Triumph TR books.

Just what I needed

This book has a virtual treasure trove of information in it about putting a Buick-Olds-Pontiac-Rover aluminum V8 in an MGB. For example, it doesn't just say "You will need a bracket to hold some particular thing," it provides a drawing of the bracket you will need to make. The book is out of print and somewhat out of date as far as suppliers are concerned but it is a real gold mine otherwise.

A bit pessimistic

A good book, with loads of detail information, but a reader will likely decide not to do the conversion after reading about all the customization and banging and chopping that, according to this book, must be performed.
From those I've talked to it's really not that bad. So use the book as a guide and don't let him talk you out of making the conversion.

Startling look into the future

I don't understand some of the critical reviews of this book. The fact is that Grids do exist today and are being used by Research oriented companies. About two dozen companies are already serving clients in the realm of grid computing. Platform Computing, United Devices, and Avaki are just three companies who are helping to create the future of the grid computing. The web succeded because it connected everybody. Until larger grids are contructed for business enterprises I agree that grid computing will not grow. The book does a great job of showing what the future may be like in terms of grid computing. Someday your computing resources will come from your local Grid Computing Company just as you get electricity from your Power Company. How that comes to be is still the ultimate question.

Mind Boggling Computing Power As a Household Utility?

The Grid's most important function is as a manifesto: It says, hey guys, we will plug-in a simple PC into the wall, and we will have at our fingertips any computational power we need. We can simulate a crash of cars with a very fine precision, in program which needs perhaps 4 weeks to run on supercomputers filling a large room.
Some pieces of software, named tools, will find the fastest way to any computer in the world, or to any number of computers in the world, which are available for you. You can hire them, you can lease them, you can pay as you use them. We may even buy a Grid Card, like a plastic calling card, and do all the computing, until the card is depleted.
All it will be possible. One day, every single supercomputer in the world will be part of the GRID making money for its owners.
How people will collaborate? Here there is a void to be filled by some giant future computer utilities corporations, not yet born. AOL can become one of them, and increase its size hundreds of times. The telecom giants of today can take leadership. Or some new start up, a name no one has heard yet, will become the code named GRID Inc.
But the GRID Inc. (my own fiction) is not a fiction in 'The Grid' edited by Ian Foster and Carl Kesselman: the reader sees the blueprint. In the next edition, we would love to add the chapter for the Global Resources Director (GRD) a software that optimizes resources in a distributed heterogeneous environment.
The people minds shift. Computer Power as electricity? Will we have at home a power-meter measured in a computing unit, something equivalent to Kilowatts? Why not?.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the GRID is coming. Ian Foster and Carl Kesselman are the first to announce it.
The rest is history.

This book has several billion dollar business plans

The Grid seems like a book from the future. I've bought over 100 books related to the Internet looking for ideas that could lead to a public company, but this one is the best. The Grid starts with simple comparisons (Chicago came from rail and 'caching' of grain elevators and stock yards) then gets technical. The topics are covered by experts and include distributed computing, sensing,and teleimmersion, programming tools, services, schedulers, resource management, visualization, security, protocols, Quality of Service, operating systems and interfaces. The pen-ultimate section was co-authored by recently deceased Internet Society head Jon Postel, and is my favorite. If covers the past, present and future of network infrastructure. The last section is test beds. At the risk of seeming ungrateful for this gold mine of future net business, there are a few omissions that I missed including the Grid in mixed environments. Low-earth orbit satellites and wireless IP broadband could have been covered, as they will be the very important parts of the Grid. The VR section totals only about ten pages and, surprisingly, doesn't even touch on entertainment applications, though entertainment (including porn) has driven many 'seeds of the grid', including video, CD-ROMs, and streaming video. A few books that might be interesting: Peter Glaser's Solar Power Satellites is very complementary: with cheap power everywhere, the grid can cover the earth, seas and even leap up into space. If you haven't read it already, I'd toss Kurzweil's Age of Intelligent Machines into the Amazon shopping cart to fill in the AI and VR gap. If you want to see how grids could grow into gods, I'd also highly recommend David Zindell's The Wild. I'm open to corresponding about where The Grid goes and grows from here, especially from investors with the know how or desire to capitalize on the new entities that will grow out of the grid, or be used to create it.

We may find this book funny now, but as a 19-year old I got a hold of this book and read it cover to cover. Since we all know how pathetic sex education in schools or from our parents is, it's not surprising how much this book taught me about my body and what to expect from a man as I was coming of age. Even though it is written for a man, as a young woman it was great to learn what to learn ways to get turned on and how to encourage my boyfriend to be a better lover.

Good Short Stories!

This book features one of Morrell's newest characters. His name is Cavanaugh and he is a professional protector. His company is called Global Protective Services. This turned out to be a very
good read. The first read was a story called "Blue Murder". Cavanaugh is hired to protect an author who has been threatened. Her name is Amanda Ryan. After Cavanaugh is hired an attempt is made
on her life at a book signing in Los Angeles. The identity of the person behind the attack will surprise you. In the next story the "Controller" Cavanaugh draws the job of protecting a billionaire. Cavanaugh recieves no cooperation from his client. The billionaire's motives and reality are surprising. In the third story of this collection "Attitude Adjuster" Barry offers a
unique service. Cavanaugh and his wife are drawn into this case and find some shocking truths. I have enjoyed the Cavanaugh stories by Morrell and I hope he continues using Cavanaugh.

Good collection of Cavanaugh tales

David Morrell is one of my favorite writers, so I always expect to enjoy his work. When I learned he had a collection of Cavanaugh stories available, I didn't hesitate. I bought it and read it immediately. This is a collection of three stories about Cavanaugh, who is a protector (not the same thing as a bodyguard). Cavanaugh has been the lead in two novels, The Protector, which is one of my favorite Morrell novels, and The Naked Edge, which I also enjoyed.

The collection leads from strength with "Blue Murder." I'd read this short story before, but I still enjoyed it on a second reading. Cavanaugh is asked to meet with a bestselling romantic suspense author who has been the subject of death threats. She's a far cry from likeable, refusing to appear at a book signing unless there are at least four hundred people, but Cavanaugh doesn't have to like someone in order to protect them. I love that Morrell played her as someone who bought into her own press. It's a good story and a nice appetizer for what's to come.

The collection's weakest story is sandwiched in the middle. "The Controller" is a good story, but I wanted it to be a stronger piece. It's one of those stories where you're reading along enjoying it, but not being wowed by it. I found it to be a little too predictable, but it's always nice to have Cavanaugh and his wife Jamie working together. I also like the insight into how and why protectors do what they do and the differences between male and female protectors. This story has a lot going for it, but it fell a bit flat for me.

The collection closes with the eponymous story. "The Attitude Adjuster" is an interesting experiment (mostly successful) where Morrell plays with viewpoints and tense. The tale begins in a present-tense second person (As you drive toward the dust and noise...) and eases into third person present tense (The man's name is Barry Pollard. He is thirty-nine, but...) and then it smoothly drops into traditional third person past tense (A voice squawked from a walkie-talkie...). It's like Morrell as the storyteller is personally leading you on the journey, introducing you to the sociopath then taking you into Barry's thoughts, and finally easing you into the comfort of a more standard form of storytelling. In my view, it was brilliant. That's one of the things I love about David Morrell, he's not afraid to take chances right down to the way to open and tell a story. The device works almost as well in reverse at the end of the story, too. Cavanaugh and Jamie show up around the halfway mark. While I wasn't surprised by the tale, it was my favorite in the collection.

Definitely worth the price of admission.

Usually I am a fan of M. Morrell, but as god he is with full lenght novel, his short strory are much less entertaining. So,in the future I keep with novel
