In "The Trobrianders of Papua New Guinea", Annette Weiner, with some input from her then-young daughter, has created an anthropological classic. Over the years, this captivating case study has provided students of history and anthropology with insightful information about a group of intriguing people whose way of life will most certainly change rapidly as the world becomes more and more homoginized.
This case study has set the bar for a new generation of anthropologists, with it's saturation of information in a highly readable format.
For the past several years, my high school students enrolled in the International Bacalaureate Social and Cultural Anthropology course have appreciated the chapters dedicated to the young Trobrianders and their courting rituals.

A Whole New World

Annette Weiner has really captured the essence of the people of the Trobriand Islands in this ethnography. She was following in the footsteps of Malinowski a well known person in her field. She was not afraid to question his findings or contradict his beliefs. In the course of this ethnography, readers will come to know the culture of the Trobriand Islands. You will understand the importance of yams in their every day life. The rituals that you know see has odd will be proven to be spiritual and have more purpose that you could have ever imagined. You will learn in detail what the death of a Trobriander means to the entire community. Reading this book will leave you in awe of these people. You will learn of a culutre that is of matrilineal descent and what that means to them. This novel will open your eyes to a whole new world. A world of traditions and spiritual beliefs. The people of the Trobriand Islands will amaze you and you will walk away from this book with more knowledge and more respect for this people than you could have ever imagined.

This is a great teaching book and I used it for years in ...

This is a great teaching book and I used it for years in introduction to anthropology. A true ethnography it gives students a sense of a holistic approach to society while moving beyond the typical ethnographic present account by critiquing aspects of Malinowski's earlier work and showing change. It isn't too long and yet covers exchange, magic, sexuality, kinship, funerary custom, complementary relationships between men and women, and more.

I have however, stopped teaching the book because the price has risen beyond a reasonable level to ask of students for this slim volume. It is a shame and the publishers are doing a disservice to anthropology by asking this much.

If you have very little time to prepare your meals this is an ideal book to assist you in preparing good food with very few ingredients and in a few minutes !

The stars are not for the recipes

If you are looking for a good French cookbook, do not start here. I have two dozen that go ahead of this one. But for literature, Pomiane's little book gets the other three stars. I use it firstly for entertainment, secondly for cultural history, and finally for ideas and inspiration. He was Polish, and therefore had a much higher appreciation for his adoptive country. He was a serious, highly respected chef and wrote a number of excellent books on cooking. I have never followed a recipe in this book as written in these fifteen years. Although you could.

He writes for a world short in duration and long past already. He wrote for that post war era when the young French were living a new life style that began to spell doom for the beret and the bistro both. How to keep with tradition when the new bosses were emulating America with the one hour lunch and twelve hour days? He tried to grasp at the last trappings of civility here. In the 10 minute cook, sounding like all those really terrible business books, the 10 minute fill-in-the-blankety-blank, his voice somehow comes through and you learn only by osmosis.

This is as tiny a book as the time is short. I read it on trains or planes. Now I will find some of his mainstream books, most probably in French. Now I know why M.F.K. Fisher called it amazingly useful. It helps like playing opera when cooking.

NO TABS IN THIS BOOK AND NO CD

NOT the same as most of these reviews. They are for a different product. No CD is included. There are no tabs in this book, unless you count the diagrams of the chord shapes. It's sheet music only. NO SOLOS ARE TABBED OUT. That being said, the chords are there if you just want to strum and sing, and there is sheet music if you can read it. Very disappointing.

I bought this book for mainly guitar tabs and secondly for the CD. I has neither. I checked the ISBN number and they match for this book. (978-0-634-01948-7) There are other similar books including one with just guitar tablature that includes a CD. I figured this book had more to it so I bought it instead. Although it's difficult to tell exactly what parts of some songs are because they flow together, the songs in the book are in the wrong order and this book seems incomplete at best. The only thing useful were the guitar chords. If you are buying this book for guitar it is not the one you wan't. I recomend you do some research before you buy any book and try to check to make sure the ISBN numbers match the one you do want. I noticed they are not always listed.AFTER POSTING THIS I NOTICED THE REVIEW IS POSTED FOR MORE THAN ONE BOOK. BE CAREFUL OF THE REVIEWS!

Accurate bass transcriptions of DSOTM . . .

I'm a big fan of the Hal Leonard "as-recorded" transcription books. They are, in my opinion, very accurate despite what other reviewers have stated. I've read reviews complaining that the fingerings were wrong and that there are easier fingerings to play the music. I have found that these "difficult" fingerings do indeed sound better (more correct) and aren't really that difficult once I've practiced them a bit.

I have several books from the series including the corresponding guitar transcription book of DSOTM. I bought this so my bass player could pick this stuff up quickly (he's an excellent sight reader so he can read/play about anything instantly). The music immediately tightened up and sounded spot-on...everybody was amazed! My bass player is now scouring for more bass books from the same series.

About the Author
David Myers is the John Dirk Werkman Professor of Psychology at Hope College where he has taught for the past 30 years. David Myers' love of teaching psychology has been rewarded by students on many occasions with numerous “Outstanding Professor” awards. An award-winning researcher, Dr. Myers received the Gordon Allport Prize from Division 9 of the American Psychological Association for his work on group polarization. His scientific articles have appeared in more than two dozen journals, including Science, American Scientist, Psychological Bulletin, and Psychological Science. He has served his discipline as consulting editor to the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Great price, it wasn't brand new

Great price, it wasn't brand new, but good shape. So far it's been a pleasure reading and studying from the book. Most classes assign several chapters that take me hours to get through. All my assigned chapters from this book take me around 2 hours to get through and I'm test ready. I didn't even finish my last assigned chapter last week and still scored a 90 on my exam.

It's an easy read with easy to understand concepts.

Very Interesting

I really enjoyed reading this book even though it was required reading for my psychology class. The concepts were fascinating and even though most of them were commonsense, they were ideas that had never occurred to me and were interesting to ponder about. If you're studying psychology I would definitely recommend this book, or if you're just interested in learning about social behavior I would recommend this book to you as well.

It does the job, the book's condition is not great though. Half of the book is holding on to the cover by a threat and sometimes it is inconvenient and somewhat a hassle.

About the Author

Alois Zoitl earned his master’s degree and PhD from the Vienna Institute of Technology. He currently leads the Industrial Automation Research Group at fortiss GmbH in Munich. Before that, he headed the Distributed Intelligent Automation Group (Odo Struger Laboratory) at the Vienna University of Technology’s Automation and Control Institute. Dr. Zoitl is an active lecturer at the Technical University Munich, co-author of 100+ publications, co-inventor on four patents, founding member of the 4DIAC and OpENer open-source initiatives, member of the IEEE and the PLC open user organization, consultant for CAN in Automation, and member/convenor of IEC SC65B/WG15 for the IEC 61499 distributed automation standard.

Thomas Strasser earned his master’s degree and PhD from the Vienna University of Technology. He is currently a senior scientist in the Energy Department of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. Before that, he spent more than six years as a senior researcher at PROFACTOR. Dr. Strasser is an active lecturer at the Vienna University of Technology, guest professor at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, co-author of 120+ publications, recipient of two patents, active participant in IEEE conferences, associate editor of Springer and IEEE journals, senior member of IEEE, founding member of the 4DIAC open source initiative, and involved in IEC SC65B/WG15, IEC TC65/WG17, and IEC SyC Smart Energy/WG6.
